E08

Anova Sous Vide Cooker

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

E08 is Anova's generic hardware fault — internal self-test detected something wrong but the controller isn't sure exactly what.
This is one of the harder codes to diagnose without service-level tools.
Power-cycle once.
If E08 persists, contact Anova support.
Most resolutions are unit replacement under warranty or a full new Anova out of warranty.

Affected Models

  • Anova Precision Cooker
  • Anova Precision Cooker Pro
  • Anova Nano
  • Anova Precision Cooker 2.0

Common Causes

  • Multiple component issues converging on a generic fault
  • Power supply degraded (out-of-spec voltage internally)
  • Recent power surge damaged multiple chips
  • Moisture damage causing intermittent issues
  • Aged components hitting end of life

How to Fix It

  1. Power-cycle the unit.

    Press power off.
    Unplug for 5 minutes.
    Plug back in.
    Power on.
The longer wait helps capacitors fully discharge.
Some E08 events clear after a thorough power cycle.

  2. Test with fresh water in clean container.

Use fresh cool water in a clean container.
Set to a normal sous vide temperature (60°C / 140°F).
    Watch the unit's behavior.
If E08 returns within a minute, the issue is fundamental.
If it runs cleanly for a while before returning, there may be specific conditions triggering it.

  3. Check for visible damage.

Inspect the Anova body for any cracks, scorch marks, or damage from drops.
Listen for unusual sounds during operation.
    Smell for any electrical burning.
Note any abnormal observations for support — informs diagnosis.

  4. Update firmware.

Check Anova app for available firmware updates.
    Apply any available updates.
Some E08 events have been resolved in firmware revisions.
If E08 persists after firmware update, hardware is genuinely failing.

  5. Contact Anova support.

    Persistent E08 means support contact.
    Contact support at support.anovaculinary.com.
Provide serial number, purchase date, and what you've tried.
    Under warranty: replacement is typical.
Out of warranty: replacement Anova is most economical.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is E08 dangerous?

Not directly — the controller has stopped operation specifically to prevent unsafe behavior.
That's the protection working correctly.
The risk would be ignoring E08 and trying to override, which most Anova firmware doesn't allow anyway.
Address the root cause via support.

Are these errors common in older Anovas?

Yes — Anova circulators built before 2018 are reaching end of life.
If yours is from that era and showing E08, it's normal end-of-life behavior.
Newer Anovas (2.0, Pro) are more reliable.
Replacement makes sense for older units rather than ongoing repair.
