E03
Joule Sous Vide Cooker
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
E03 on Joule means the temperature sensor is reading bad data — broken, shorted, or out of range.
The unit refuses to heat without working sensor feedback.
Check for heavy mineral buildup on the bottom of Joule (descale if needed).
If E03 persists after descaling, contact Breville support — sensor isn't user-fixable on Joule.
Affected Models
- Joule (ChefSteps)
- Breville Joule
- Joule 1100W
Common Causes
- Sensor failed (open or shorted)
- Heavy mineral buildup insulating sensor
- Sensor wire broken inside the unit
- Controller sensor input damaged
- Recent power event damaged sensor circuit
How to Fix It
-
Power off and remove from water.
Press power off, unplug.
Carefully lift Joule from the water bath.
Hold over a sink to let residual water drain from the bottom intake. -
Inspect the heating element area.
Look at the bottom of Joule.
Heavy white scale (calcium deposits) insulates the temperature sensor.
If you see thick deposits, that's likely E03 cause.
Light scale is usually OK; heavy scale needs descaling. -
Descale Joule.
Container with 50/50 white vinegar and water.
Set Joule to 60°C and run 30 minutes.
Vinegar dissolves calcium deposits.
Rinse thoroughly afterward.
Repeat if heavily scaled. -
Test with fresh water.
After descaling, fresh water in clean container.
Set to 60°C and start.
Watch temperature climb.
If smooth and reaches setpoint, sensor is working.
If E03 returns, sensor has failed. -
Contact Breville support.
Joule is now sold by Breville.
Contact support.breville.com.
Provide serial number and purchase date.
Under Breville's warranty (2 years on Joule typical): replacement is offered.
Out of warranty: replacement of the unit is most economical.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Joule fail more in hard water?
Hard water (high mineral content) leaves calcium deposits on the heating element and sensor over time.
The deposits insulate the sensor from accurate water temperature reading.
Eventually the sensor reads inconsistently and fails.
Annual descaling extends life noticeably; quarterly in very hard water.
Is Breville support better than Anova?
Breville's warranty support is generally well-regarded.
Their phone support and warranty handling for Joule is comparable to Anova.
Both companies will replace defective units under warranty.
Out of warranty, both lean toward replacement rather than repair on these consumer-priced items.
