E05
Joule Sous Vide Cooker
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
E05 indicates an internal controller fault on Joule — communication between subsystems has failed or the main board has detected something wrong.
Power-cycle to rule out transient glitches.
If E05 persists, hardware is failing.
Contact Breville support — these consumer-priced units are typically replaced rather than repaired.
Affected Models
- Joule (ChefSteps)
- Breville Joule
- Joule 1100W
Common Causes
- Controller chip failed
- Communication ribbon damaged
- Power surge damaged communication
- Moisture damage
- Recent firmware corruption
How to Fix It
-
Power-cycle the unit.
Press power off.
Unplug for 60 seconds.
Plug back in and power on.
Some E05 events are transient memory issues that clear after a clean reboot. -
Try without app connection.
Joule normally requires the app for cook setup.
If app connection is glitching, that can cause E05 on some firmware versions.
Power-cycle and try the app freshly — close and reopen, reconnect Bluetooth.
Sometimes the issue is on the phone app side, not the unit. -
Update firmware via app.
Open the Joule app and check for firmware updates.
Apply any available updates.
Some E05 events have been resolved in firmware updates.
If E05 persists after firmware update, hardware is genuinely failing. -
Check for moisture damage.
Has Joule been splashed or had water enter the upper housing?
Moisture causes communication faults.
Dry for 24 hours in a sealed bag with silica gel before retesting.
If E05 was caused by moisture, it may resolve after thorough drying. -
Contact Breville support.
Persistent E05 means hardware replacement.
Contact support.breville.com.
Provide serial number and purchase date.
Under warranty: replacement.
Out of warranty: a new Joule (200 USD typical) is most economical vs. repair attempts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my saved cook profiles transfer to a replacement?
Yes — cook profiles in the app are tied to your account, not the specific Joule device.
Your profiles, recipes, and cook history transfer when you set up a replacement.
Just sign in with the same account on the replacement unit.
Why does Joule have communication faults?
Joule heavily relies on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for setup and control.
This adds complexity vs. simple knob-and-display circulators like older Anovas.
The trade-off is more flexibility (recipes, remote monitoring) but more potential failure points.
That's the design choice.
