Compass Calibration Required
Minn Kota Trolling Motor
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
'Compass Calibration Required' means the trolling motor's internal compass has lost reference and AutoPilot or Spot-Lock can't function.
Calibration takes 2 minutes: drive the boat in slow circles and the compass auto-calibrates.
Open water, away from large metal objects (other boats, docks, cars).
Most calibration warnings clear after one good calibration cycle.
Affected Models
- Minn Kota Terrova
- Minn Kota Ultrex
- Minn Kota Ulterra
- Minn Kota Riptide ST
Common Causes
- Compass needs initial calibration after motor install
- Magnetic interference from nearby metal moved (anchor, tackle box)
- Compass calibration drifted from time
- Heading sensor failed
- Recently struck the motor — knocking the compass out of alignment
How to Fix It
-
Get to open water.
Calibration needs space.
Move the boat to open water, away from large metal objects (other boats, docks, the boat trailer).
Engine off, foot pedal in hand.
Confirm GPS has a fix on your Humminbird/Lowrance display. -
Open the calibration menu.
On the i-Pilot remote: Menu → Compass Cal.
On older units: hold MENU on the foot pedal until the calibration screen appears.
The trolling motor will display a compass icon and a counter. -
Spin the boat in slow circles.
Use the trolling motor at low speed.
Drive the boat in a slow circle — about 30 seconds per full circle.
Continue circling for 2-3 full rotations.
The trolling motor reads compass values at each heading and builds a calibration map. -
Watch for the calibration complete message.
When calibration is successful, the unit shows a 'Calibration Complete' or similar message.
If it shows 'Calibration Failed', try again in a different location with less metal nearby.
Sometimes 2-3 attempts in different spots are needed. -
Test AutoPilot.
Engage AutoPilot and set a heading.
The trolling motor should hold heading consistently.
If it drifts or the heading display jumps, the calibration didn't take and needs another attempt — or the heading sensor itself is failing.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I calibrate the compass?
Once at install, then only when the unit prompts for it.
You don't need to calibrate before every trip.
If you see 'Compass Calibration Required' more than once a year, the unit is having sensor drift issues — service may be needed.
Why does calibration fail in some spots?
Magnetic interference from large metal nearby — anchored boats with steel hulls, marine docks with heavy iron, cars in the parking lot.
The compass can't get a clean reading.
Move 50-100 yards away and try again.
Open water, well away from the boat ramp, is ideal.
