Deploy Motor to Water
Minn Kota Trolling Motor
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
'Deploy motor to water' means the Ulterra's auto-stow saw stowed but the controller can't confirm the motor is actually in the water.
Either the position sensor is dirty, the deploy mechanism is jammed, or the head needs a fresh calibration.
Manually deploy via the controller, run a stow/deploy calibration, and clean the linear actuator track if salty.
Affected Models

- Minn Kota Ulterra QUEST
Common Causes
- Position sensor on the deploy mechanism dirty or wet
- Linear actuator slow or jammed (corrosion, debris)
- Foot pedal command interrupted mid-deploy
- Calibration drifted after a hard knock or transport bump
- Limit switches sticking
How to Fix It
-
Manually deploy via remote or foot pedal.
Press the deploy button explicitly.
Watch the motor go from stow to fishing position.
If it stops part-way, that's where the problem is. -
Inspect the linear actuator track.
The Ulterra's auto-deploy uses a screw-style linear actuator inside the mount.
Saltwater corrosion and barnacle debris slow it down.
Wipe the visible track with a damp rag, then dry. -
Lubricate the deploy mechanism.
Apply a small amount of marine-grade silicone spray to the visible track and pivot points — never WD-40 (attracts grit).
Cycle deploy/stow a few times to spread it.
Wipe excess. -
Run a stow/deploy calibration.
On the i-Pilot remote: Settings → Calibrate Deploy.
Follow the prompts: stow fully, then deploy fully.
The motor learns the limit positions.
This fixes most 'deploy to water' false alarms. -
Check both limit switches.
There are end-of-travel switches at stow and deploy.
If one is sticking, the motor never sees 'fully deployed' and the warning persists.
This is dealer-level work — book a service appointment if calibration doesn't fix it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I bypass auto-stow and operate manually?
You can deploy and stow manually using the remote at any time.
If auto-stow keeps failing, work around it by operating the motor manually until you get it serviced.
Don't use the motor in stowed position — props out of water can spin freely and damage the bushing.
