Foot Pedal Disconnected

Minn Kota Trolling Motor

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

'Foot Pedal Disconnected' means the Minn Kota's controller can't communicate with the wired foot pedal.
Either the cable has come unplugged, has been damaged, or the foot pedal itself has failed.
Power off the trolling motor, unplug and reseat the foot pedal cable at the motor head.
Most events fix at the connector — corrosion or loose pins are the typical culprit.

Affected Models

  • Minn Kota Terrova
  • Minn Kota Ultrex
  • Minn Kota Ulterra
  • Minn Kota Riptide
  • Minn Kota PowerDrive

Common Causes

  • Foot pedal cable connector loose at the motor head
  • Connector pins corroded from saltwater or pond water
  • Cable damaged where it routes through the boat (kinked or stepped on)
  • Foot pedal internal switch failed
  • Connector internal damage from impact

How to Fix It

  1. Power off the trolling motor.

Pull the power plug or switch the trolling motor off at the battery switch.
Don't work on cables with the motor live.
Wait 30 seconds before disconnecting anything.

  2. Find the foot pedal cable at the motor head.

Trace the cable from the foot pedal back to where it plugs into the trolling motor head (the top of the motor where electronics live).
The plug is usually a multi-pin connector with a locking ring or screw collar.

  3. Unplug and inspect.

Unscrew the locking ring and pull the connector out.
Look at the pins — should be clean and straight.
Green or white powder is corrosion.
    Bent pins indicate impact damage.
If pins are corroded, clean with a small wire brush; if bent, gently straighten with needle-nose pliers.

  4. Apply dielectric grease and reseat.

A tiny amount of dielectric grease (5 USD tube at any auto parts store) protects against future corrosion.
Apply a thin coating to the pins.
Don't pack the connector full of grease — just a coating.
Push the connector firmly back together and tighten the locking ring by hand.

  5. Test the foot pedal.

    Power up the trolling motor.
Press buttons on the foot pedal — does the motor respond?
    If yes, you've fixed it.
If 'Foot Pedal Disconnected' returns or the foot pedal is unresponsive, the foot pedal itself or the cable has internal damage.
Replacement foot pedals are 100-200 USD parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fix it without a foot pedal?

Yes — most Minn Kota Terrova/Ultrex have remote controls and i-Pilot wireless options that work without the foot pedal.
Use the remote until the foot pedal is repaired.
For competitive fishing, foot pedal is preferred for hands-free precision; for casual use, remote is fine.

How can I prevent foot pedal cable damage?

Run the cable through a flexible cable cover (10-15 USD) where it crosses the deck.
Don't let it lie in standing water.
Coil it cleanly when storing — sharp bends cause internal wire breaks over time.
Keep heavy boots off the connector; that's where most damage happens.
