Heading Sensor Error

MotorGuide Trolling Motor

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

'Heading Sensor Error' means the trolling motor's internal compass is reading bad data.
Either calibration is needed, magnetic interference is overwhelming the sensor, or the sensor itself has failed.
Calibrate the compass first — 2-minute spin procedure in open water.
If recalibration doesn't fix it, the sensor is failed and needs MotorGuide service.

Affected Models

  • MotorGuide Xi5
  • MotorGuide Xi3
  • MotorGuide Tour Pro

Common Causes

  • Compass needs calibration after install or impact
  • Magnetic interference from metal that's been moved
  • Compass drift from temperature/time
  • Heading sensor failed
  • Recent impact knocked sensor out of alignment

How to Fix It

  1. Get to open water.

Compass calibration needs space away from metal.
Move 50-100 yards from other boats, docks, or the boat trailer.
Engine off, foot pedal in hand.
Confirm GPS has a fix on your fishfinder.

  2. Open the compass calibration menu.

On the MotorGuide remote: Menu → Compass Cal.
On older units: hold the menu button on the foot pedal until calibration screen appears.
The unit shows a calibration counter or compass display.

  3. Spin the boat slowly.

Use the trolling motor at low speed.
Drive the boat in slow circles — about 30 seconds per full rotation.
    Continue for 2-3 full rotations.
The unit reads compass values at each heading.

  4. Watch for completion.

Look for 'Calibration Complete' or similar success message.
If you see 'Calibration Failed', try again in a different location with less metal nearby.
Sometimes 2-3 attempts are needed in different spots before success.

  5. Schedule MotorGuide service if recalibration fails.

If recalibration in clean open water fails repeatedly, the heading sensor itself is failed.
That's a service-tech repair — accessing the sensor requires opening the motor head.
MotorGuide-authorized service centers do this; cost typically 200-400 USD.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the heading display jump randomly?

Random heading jumps mean the sensor is failing or facing strong magnetic interference.
Try a different location.
If jumps continue in clean open water, the sensor is gone.
The MotorGuide app may show the heading reading — useful for confirming sensor failure.

Can I use the trolling motor without the compass working?

Yes — manual control still works.
What you lose: AutoPilot, Pinpoint heading-hold, and any heading-based features.
For casual fishing this is fine; for serious tournament fishing, fix the heading sensor before the next event.
