Pinpoint GPS Lost
MotorGuide Trolling Motor
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
'Pinpoint GPS Lost' on MotorGuide Xi5 means the trolling motor's GPS has lost satellite lock — Pinpoint (anchor mode) disengages because it can't hold position without GPS.
Move to clear sky view, wait 1-2 minutes for GPS to reacquire, then re-engage Pinpoint.
If signal loss is persistent, check the GPS antenna on the motor head for damage or obstruction.
Affected Models
- MotorGuide Xi5
- MotorGuide Xi3
- MotorGuide Tour Pro
- MotorGuide Tour
Common Causes
- Trolling motor under bridge, T-top, or near tall structures
- GPS antenna covered or blocked
- Heavy weather affecting GPS briefly
- GPS receiver wire damaged or loose
- GPS receiver internally failed
How to Fix It
-
Move to clear sky view.
Get the boat into open water with no overhead obstructions.
Wait 1-2 minutes for the GPS to re-acquire.
If the GPS receiver is healthy, signal returns within that time.
Most Pinpoint Lost events clear once obstructions are gone. -
Re-engage Pinpoint.
Once GPS has reacquired, press Pinpoint on the remote or foot pedal.
If it engages and holds, you're back to normal.
If it disengages within seconds, GPS is still marginal — wait longer or move. -
Inspect the GPS antenna.
Look at the top of the trolling motor head.
The GPS antenna is usually a small bump or panel on top.
Should be free of debris, rain cover, or anything blocking it.
Wipe with a soft cloth — salt buildup can attenuate the signal. -
Check for cable damage.
If your motor has separate GPS module wiring, trace it for damage or chafe.
Saltwater corrosion on connectors causes intermittent GPS that mimics Lost Signal.
Clean any green or white powder with a small wire brush. -
Update the firmware.
MotorGuide periodically releases firmware updates that improve GPS reliability.
Use the MotorGuide app to check for updates and apply.
Some Pinpoint issues have been resolved in firmware over the product's lifecycle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Pinpoint hold position better than Spot-Lock?
MotorGuide Pinpoint and Minn Kota Spot-Lock are similar features — both use GPS to hold position.
Performance is comparable in most conditions; differences come down to setup and personal preference.
Both need clear GPS reception and adequate battery to function reliably.
Can I use Pinpoint in shallow water?
Yes — but if the trolling motor hits bottom or works hard against current, it may disengage even with good GPS.
That's not Pinpoint Lost (GPS issue) but the motor's protection from overload.
Different cause, different fix.
Trim the motor higher or use less aggressive Pinpoint settings.
