Brush Roll Indicator
Bissell Vacuum Cleaner
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
The brush roll indicator light on a Bissell vacuum means the brush roll has stopped spinning — usually from hair or string wrapped around it. Switch off, clear all debris from the brush roll, and restart.
Affected Models
- Bissell ProHeat 2X
- Bissell PowerForce Helix
- Bissell CleanView
- Bissell Turboclean
- Bissell CrossWave
Common Causes
- Hair, string, or fibres tightly wound around the brush roll
- Debris jammed between the brush roll and its housing
- Brush roll belt broken or slipped off the motor pulley
- Brush roll bearing seized
How to Fix It
-
Switch off and unplug the vacuum.
Never attempt to clear the brush roll while the machine is running.
-
Access the brush roll.
On upright Bissell models, flip the vacuum face-down. Open the brush roll access door at the base — on most models this unclips or unlatches without tools.
-
Cut and remove all wrapped hair and string.
Use scissors to cut along the length of the brush roll to free tightly wound hair. Remove all debris from the ends of the roll and from the brush channel. This is the most common cause of the indicator light.
-
Check the belt (on belt-driven models).
On Bissell upright models with a rubber drive belt, check that the belt is still seated around the brush roll shaft and motor pulley. A broken or slipped belt means the brush roll cannot spin regardless of debris. Replace a worn belt.
-
Reinstall and test.
Close the brush roll cover, plug in, and restart. The brush roll indicator should go off. If it stays on with the brush roll clear and belt intact, the brush roll motor may have failed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I vacuum without the brush roll spinning?
The vacuum will still create suction without the brush roll spinning, but it will not effectively clean carpet. On hard floors it may work adequately, but carpet cleaning requires the brush roll to agitate fibres.
How do I prevent the brush roll indicator from coming on so often?
Clean the brush roll after every few uses — especially if you have pets or long hair in the household. Cutting hair off the brush roll before it builds up prevents stalling and protects the belt and motor.
