E1
Bissell Vacuum Cleaner
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
E1 on a Bissell CrossWave means the brush roll is blocked by hair or debris, or the brush motor has stalled. Remove the brush roll, clear all debris, clean the brush window, and reinstall before restarting.
Affected Models
- Bissell CrossWave
- Bissell CrossWave Cordless
- Bissell CrossWave Max
- Bissell CrossWave Pet Pro
- Bissell CrossWave HydroSteam
Common Causes
- Hair or string wrapped tightly around the brush roll
- Debris jammed between the brush roll and its housing
- Brush roll bearing worn or seized
- Brush roll not seated properly after cleaning
How to Fix It
-
Switch off and unplug the CrossWave.
Never attempt to clear the brush roll with the machine powered on.
-
Remove the brush roll.
Flip the CrossWave upside down and open the brush roll door (a hinged cover at the base). Slide or lift out the brush roll — it typically lifts straight out.
-
Clear all hair and debris.
Use scissors to cut through wrapped hair along the brush roll. Remove all debris from the brush roll channel and the plastic brush window. Hair buildup is the leading cause of E1.
-
Rinse the brush roll and let it dry.
Rinse the brush roll under warm water. Allow it to air dry fully before reinstalling — running a wet brush roll in the machine can cause motor issues.
-
Reinstall and test.
Slide the brush roll back in, close the brush roll door firmly until it clicks, then restart. If E1 returns immediately, the brush motor may have seized and requires service.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I clean the Bissell CrossWave brush roll?
Bissell recommends cleaning the brush roll after every use. Regular cleaning prevents hair and debris from building up to the level that causes E1.
Can I use the CrossWave without the brush roll?
No — the CrossWave requires the brush roll to be installed and spinning to function. Operating without it damages the machine and voids the warranty.
