E2

Bissell Vacuum Cleaner

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

E2 on a Bissell CrossWave means the dirty water tank is full or has been removed and not properly reinstalled. Empty the dirty water tank, rinse it out, and firmly reseat it until it clicks into place.

Affected Models

  • Bissell CrossWave
  • Bissell CrossWave Cordless
  • Bissell CrossWave Max
  • Bissell CrossWave Pet Pro
  • Bissell CrossWave HydroSteam

Common Causes

  • Dirty water tank reached maximum capacity
  • Dirty water tank not fully clicked into position after last cleaning
  • Tank float sensor stuck in full position due to foam or residue
  • Tank cracked and leaking, causing false full reading

How to Fix It

  1. Remove the dirty water tank.

The dirty water tank (dark/translucent container) sits at the rear of the CrossWave. Lift or pull it straight up to remove.

  2. Empty and rinse the dirty water tank.

Pour the dirty water out, then rinse the tank thoroughly with clean water. A visible waterline does not always mean full — rinse regardless, as residue can cause the float sensor to stick.

  3. Check the float sensor inside the tank.

Look inside the tank for the small float sensor (a plastic piece that rises when water level is high). Rinse it gently — soap residue or foam can cause it to stick in the raised (full) position.

  4. Firmly reseat the tank.

Replace the dirty water tank and press it firmly down until you hear or feel a click. A tank that is not fully seated triggers E2 even when empty.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I empty the dirty water tank on my Bissell CrossWave?

Empty the dirty water tank after every use — do not leave dirty water sitting in the tank. This keeps the float sensor clean and prevents odours and bacterial growth in the machine.

E2 keeps appearing even with an empty tank — what is wrong?

If E2 persists after emptying and reseating, the float sensor is likely stuck due to soap or detergent residue. Fill the tank with clean water, shake gently, and empty again several times to rinse the sensor free.
