E16
Bosch Washing Machine
Severity: ModerateWhat it means
Bosch washer E16 error (also displayed as F16 on some models) means the door is not closed properly — Bosch's 'Door not closed' code.
The cycle can't begin or has paused because the door switch isn't reporting that the door is shut and locked.
Affected Models
- Bosch Serie 2 / Serie 4 / Serie 6 / Serie 8 washing machines
- Bosch Logixx, Maxx, Classixx ranges (older naming)
- Bosch WAW, WAT, WAY, WAQ model series
- Bosch Varioperfect washers
- Same codes appear on Siemens and Neff washers (shared platform)
Common Causes
- Door not pushed fully closed — push firmly until you hear a click
- Item of clothing trapped between door and seal
- Door latch hook bent or damaged
- Door interlock (lock solenoid) failing
- Wiring loose at the door switch connector
How to Fix It
-
Close the door firmly.
Push the door shut with deliberate force.
You should hear a definite click as the latch engages.
Half-closed doors are the most common E16 trigger. -
Check for trapped items.
Open the door and inspect the rubber seal all the way around.
Socks, underwear, or scrunched clothing can sit in the seal and prevent the latch engaging.
Remove anything pinched there. -
Inspect the latch hook.
On the door itself, find the small metal hook that engages the lock.
It should be straight and undamaged.
If bent, the door won't latch and the door panel needs replacement. -
Power-cycle the washer.
Unplug the washer for 60 seconds, plug back in.
This clears a one-off control board glitch.
If E16 returns immediately, the door interlock is the suspect.
When to Call a Professional
If the door shuts firmly with a click but E16 persists, the door interlock has failed and needs replacement — typically a 30-minute job and an inexpensive part for a technician.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Bosch E16 and F16 errors?
Same fault — both mean 'Door not closed'.
Bosch uses E for temporary errors and F for permanent / fault-stored versions of the same condition.
E16 may clear if you simply close the door properly; F16 may persist until the underlying fault is repaired.
Treat them as the same code with the same diagnostic and fix path.
