E19

Bosch Washing Machine

Severity: Moderate

What it means

Bosch washer E19 error (also F19 on some models) means the heating time has been exceeded — Bosch's 'Heating time exceeded' code.
The water didn't reach target temperature within the time allowed for the cycle, usually because the heating element is scaled up or has failed.

Affected Models

  • Bosch Serie 2 / Serie 4 / Serie 6 / Serie 8 washing machines
  • Bosch Logixx, Maxx, Classixx ranges (older naming)
  • Bosch WAW, WAT, WAY, WAQ model series
  • Bosch Varioperfect washers
  • Same codes appear on Siemens and Neff washers (shared platform)

Common Causes

  • Heater element scaled up — heavy limescale prevents heat transfer
  • Heater element burned out (open circuit)
  • Temperature sensor (thermistor) faulty
  • Heater wiring loose at the control board
  • Insufficient water in tub during heat phase (fill issue)

How to Fix It

  1. Run a hot service / descale cycle.

Run the hottest cycle (usually 90°C cottons) with a descaling tablet or a cup of white vinegar in the drum (no clothes).
This dissolves limescale on the heater element and often fully restores heating.
Heavy limescale is the single most common E19 cause in hard-water areas.

  2. Try a cold-only wash to confirm.

    Run a cold wash.
If it completes without E19, the heater or sensor is the issue (cold doesn't use them).
If E19 still appears on a cold wash, the issue is the temperature sensor or control board.

  3. Check household power.

    Heaters draw 2 kW.
If your circuit can't sustain that — old wiring, undersized fuse — the heater may not get full power and time out.
Try the washer on a different circuit if possible.

  4. Replace the heater (technician).

If descaling and a cold-cycle test confirm the heater, replacement is needed.
Bosch heater elements are inexpensive (£20–£40) and a 45-60 minute job for a technician.
Buy a Bosch-branded part for correct fit.

When to Call a Professional

Descaling and element replacement are the typical fixes.
Element replacement is a technician job — back panel comes off and the heater (with thermistor in the same housing) gets swapped.
Part costs £20–£40.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will descaling really fix Bosch E19?

In hard-water areas, yes — frequently.
A heater element coated in 5+ mm of limescale can't transfer heat to the water no matter how long it runs, and Bosch's heater time-out triggers E19.
Running a hot cycle with a strong descaling tablet (Calgon, citric acid powder, or white vinegar) dissolves the scale and restores heat transfer.
If E19 persists after descaling and a cold-cycle test confirms hot is the issue, replacement is the next step.
