E21
Bosch Washing Machine
Severity: CriticalWhat it means
Bosch washer E21 error means the motor is locked or jammed — Bosch's specific 'Motor lock-up' code.
The most common cause on aging Bosch washers is worn-out carbon brushes inside the motor; less commonly, a foreign object jamming the drum, or a failed motor itself.
Affected Models
- Bosch Serie 2 / Serie 4 / Serie 6 / Serie 8 washing machines
- Bosch Logixx, Maxx, Classixx ranges (older naming)
- Bosch WAW, WAT, WAY, WAQ model series
- Bosch Varioperfect washers
- Same codes appear on Siemens and Neff washers (shared platform)
Common Causes
- Motor carbon brushes worn down (wear part — typical 6-10 year life)
- Foreign object jammed between drum and outer tub
- Motor windings failed (electrical fault inside motor)
- Drive belt slipping or broken (some Bosch models)
- Drum bearing seized
How to Fix It
-
Power-cycle the washer.
Unplug for 60 seconds, plug back in.
One-off motor stalls sometimes clear with a reboot.
If E21 returns immediately on next cycle, the issue is mechanical. -
Check for foreign objects in the drum.
Open the door and reach into the drum.
Feel around the inner edge between the drum and the outer tub for any small objects (coins, hairpins, screws) that might have lodged there.
Remove anything you find. -
Try to spin the drum by hand.
With the washer empty and unplugged, try to turn the drum by hand.
It should spin freely with some resistance.
If it's seized solid, the bearing has failed (expensive repair).
If it spins but the cycle won't start, brushes or motor are suspect. -
Replace carbon brushes.
On older Bosch washers, the back of the motor has two small access caps with the carbon brushes underneath.
Pull the brushes out and check — if worn down to a stub (under 10 mm), replace.
The part is cheap and a quick swap once you have access.
When to Call a Professional
Carbon brushes are an inexpensive part (£10–£20) and a moderately involved replacement — not for absolute beginners but doable for a confident DIYer.
Motor or bearing replacement is technician work and significantly more expensive.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do Bosch washer motor brushes typically last?
Around 6-10 years for a household washer doing 4-5 loads a week.
Heavier use or heavy loads wear them faster.
Signs that brushes are getting near end of life: occasional slow start to the drum, sparking visible at the back of the motor, gradually weaker spin, and eventually E21.
Replacing brushes before they fail completely is cheaper than waiting — once the brush stub is gone, the brush holder can score the commutator and require motor replacement instead of just brush replacement.
