E40

Electrolux Washing Machine

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

Electrolux washer E40 error means the door is not properly closed or the door lock has not engaged. Check for clothing caught in the door seal, clean the latch, and close the door firmly until it clicks.

Affected Models

  • Electrolux Front Load Washer
  • Electrolux EWF Series Washer
  • Electrolux PerfectCare Washer
  • Electrolux UltimateCare Washer

Common Causes

  • Clothing or foreign object caught in the door seal
  • Debris in the door latch preventing full engagement
  • Worn door seal preventing the door from closing flush
  • Failed door lock mechanism
  • Wiring fault on the door interlock switch

How to Fix It

  1. Check for clothing in the door seal.

Open the door and inspect the rubber gasket all the way around. A small piece of fabric caught in the seal prevents full door closure and triggers E40.

  2. Clean the door latch area.

Wipe the door latch and the striker on the machine frame with a damp cloth. Detergent residue and fibres build up on these parts and prevent full engagement.

  3. Close the door firmly.

Push the door closed until you hear a distinct click. Electrolux front-load washers require a firm push — a gentle close may not trigger the door lock.

  4. Perform a power cycle.

Switch off at the wall for 1 minute, then plug back in. Select a new programme and close the door firmly before pressing Start. A power cycle clears a transient E40 caused by a lock that did not engage on the first try.

When to Call a Professional

If the door closes and latches securely but E40 persists, the door lock interlock or wiring has failed and needs replacement by a technician.
