AE

LG Washing Machine

Severity: Critical

What it means

LG washer AE error means a leakage has been detected inside the appliance — LG's specific 'leakage inside the appliance' code.
The leak sensor in the bottom of the washer detected water where it shouldn't be.
The washer stops to prevent flooding the room.

Affected Models

  • LG Front Load Washer
  • LG Top Load Washer
  • LG WashTower (combined washer + dryer)
  • LG TurboWash Washer
  • LG TwinWash Washer

Common Causes

  • Inlet hose connection loose at the back of the machine
  • Door seal (rubber gasket) torn or worn
  • Drain pump or pump gasket leaking
  • Detergent drawer overflowing — too much detergent or blocked drawer holes
  • Internal hose split or perished

How to Fix It

  1. Unplug at the wall.

Switch off and unplug the washer.
Look for visible water on the floor under and around the unit.
Mop up so you can see fresh leaks more easily.

  2. Check inlet hose connections.

At the back of the machine, hand-tighten both ends of the inlet hose.
Inspect the rubber washers inside; perished washers are the most common single AE cause and replacement washers cost a few pence.

  3. Inspect the door seal.

Run a finger around the rubber gasket on the door looking for tears, holes, or detergent build-up.
A torn seal needs replacement; a dirty seal needs cleaning with a 50/50 white vinegar and water mix.

  4. Clean the detergent drawer.

Pull the drawer out and rinse it under the tap.
Check the housing inside for blocked holes — these cause water back-up that drips down the front of the machine and triggers AE.

When to Call a Professional

AE is the washer protecting itself and your home from a flood — don't bypass it.
If you've checked all visible hoses and the seal but AE keeps appearing dry, the leak sensor itself has failed (rare) or there's an internal leak that needs a technician.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is LG AE error always a real leak?

Almost always — yes.
The leak sensor at the bottom of the washer is a simple float / electrode that triggers when it touches water.
It's very reliable and rarely gives false readings.
If AE keeps appearing but you can't see any water on the floor, the leak is likely internal — between the outer tub and the cabinet, where you wouldn't see it from outside.
Don't ignore AE; even an internal leak that doesn't reach the floor immediately can damage the control board and motor over time.
