Sud

LG Washing Machine

Severity: Moderate

What it means

LG washer Sud error means too many suds have been detected in the drum — LG's 'Excessive suds detected' code (also shown as 'Sud' on most front-load LG washers).
The washer pauses to handle the foam — it can't spin properly with excess suds and detergent overflow risks leaks.

Affected Models

  • LG Front Load Washer
  • LG Top Load Washer
  • LG WashTower (combined washer + dryer)
  • LG TurboWash Washer
  • LG TwinWash Washer

Common Causes

  • Too much detergent for the load size
  • Regular (high-foaming) detergent used in an HE washer
  • Soft water area — less detergent needed than the box says
  • Liquid fabric softener overdose
  • Pre-soaked items adding extra detergent to the wash

How to Fix It

  1. Wait for the washer to handle it.

On most LG washers, Sud is followed by an automatic extra rinse cycle that adds water to dilute and flush out the foam.
This adds 10-30 minutes to the cycle.
Don't open the door or interrupt — the washer handles it.

  2. Use less detergent next time.

Reduce detergent dose to roughly half of the box's recommended amount.
Most detergent boxes overstate the dose; modern HE washers need surprisingly little detergent — 30-40 ml of liquid for a normal load is plenty.

  3. Switch to HE detergent.

Make sure your detergent is labelled 'HE' (High Efficiency) — these are formulated to produce minimal foam.
Regular detergents in an HE front-load washer foam excessively and trigger Sud regularly.

  4. Run a Tub Clean cycle.

If Sud has been happening repeatedly, run a Tub Clean cycle (with no detergent, just hot water) to flush detergent build-up out of the drum and dispenser.
This often eliminates persistent Sud caused by accumulated residue.

When to Call a Professional

Sud is rarely a hardware fault — almost always the detergent dose.
Reduce detergent and switch to HE-formulated detergent if not already; the issue resolves on the next cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my LG washer keep showing Sud even when I use HE detergent?

Three common reasons even with HE detergent.
First — the dose is still too high; HE detergent boxes also overstate the recommended amount, especially in soft-water areas.
Second — fabric softener is being overdosed; softener also foams.
Third — the drum has months of detergent residue inside that adds to current-load foam; run a Tub Clean cycle with no detergent to flush it out.
If Sud still happens after halving the dose and running Tub Clean, switch to a different brand of HE detergent — some brands foam more than others even within the HE category.
