LF
Maytag Washing Machine
Severity: ModerateWhat it means
Maytag washer LF is the Long Fill code.
Maytag's exact wording: 'If F8 E1 or LF (long fill) appears in the display, the washer is taking too long to fill.'
This is fill-side and almost always something owner-fixable — a closed supply valve, a kinked hose, or a drain hose installed in a way that siphons water out as fast as it comes in.
Affected Models
- Maytag Bravos and Bravos XL top-load washers (MVWB, MVWX series)
- Maytag Centennial top-load washers (MVWC series)
- Maytag Maxima front-load washers (MHW series)
- Maytag Commercial-Grade top-load washers (MVW series)
- Same codes appear on Whirlpool, KitchenAid, and Amana washers (shared platform)
Common Causes
- Hot or cold supply valve closed or only partially open
- Inlet hose kinked behind the washer
- Drain hose pushed more than 4.5 inches into the standpipe (siphons while filling)
- Standpipe sealed at the top (no air gap) causing siphon
- Inlet screens at the back of the washer clogged with mineral buildup
How to Fix It
-
Open both water supply valves.
Maytag: 'Please ensure that both inlet hoses are connected and that both hot and cold water supplies are turned on.'
Behind the washer, turn each valve counter-clockwise until it stops.
Maytag washers need both hot AND cold for the fill cycle — turning off one because you only use cold doesn't work. -
Straighten the inlet hoses.
Maytag: 'Make sure the drain hose is not kinked or clogged. Straighten the hose for adequate water flow.'
The same applies to the inlet hoses — pull the washer out an inch to confirm no kinks or sharp bends where the hose meets the wall. -
Check drain hose insertion depth.
Maytag's exact wording: 'Check that only 4.5" (113 mm) of drain hose is in the drainpipe (standpipe). Do not tape over the drain opening.'
If the hose is pushed deeper than 4.5 inches, withdraw it.
Deep insertion or a taped seal causes siphoning — the washer fills and drains simultaneously and never reaches the target level. -
Confirm the standpipe air gap.
Maytag's published cause for LF: 'Any of these drain hose issues can cause the washer to siphon (fill and drain at the same time), and the washer never fills to the expected level.'
The standpipe must have an air gap around the drain hose — never tape over it. -
Clean the inlet screens.
Shut off both supply valves, unscrew each inlet hose from the back of the washer, and pull out the small mesh screens inside each connection with needle-nose pliers.
Rinse under running water and refit.
Mineral buildup on these screens reduces flow gradually and eventually triggers LF.
When to Call a Professional
LF is owner-fixable for fill, hose, and siphon issues.
If the supply is fully on, hoses are clear, the drain hose has the correct insertion depth and air gap, and LF still appears — schedule service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does LF sometimes appear alongside F8E1 — are they the same code?
Yes, essentially.
Maytag's own LF page groups them together: 'F8 E1 or LF (long fill) appears in the display.'
F8E1 is the modern dot-matrix display version on newer Maytag washers; LF is the same fault rendered on simpler 3-character displays that can't show 'F8E1'.
The cause and fix are identical.
