Lid Lock Flashing

Maytag Washing Machine

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

A flashing lid lock light on a Maytag top-load washer means the lid lock is not engaging. Close the lid firmly, check the lid striker for cracks, and reset the machine by unplugging it for 1 minute.

Affected Models

  • Maytag Top Load Washer
  • Maytag Bravos Washer
  • Maytag Centennial Washer
  • Maytag MVWC Series Washer

Common Causes

  • Lid not closed fully — striker not reaching the lock sensor
  • Lid striker broken or worn
  • Lid lock switch failed or stuck
  • Foreign object preventing the lid from closing fully
  • Control board fault preventing lock signal

How to Fix It

  1. Close the lid firmly.

Push the lid down firmly until you hear a click. A gentle close may not engage the lock. The lid lock light should stop flashing once the lock engages.

  2. Inspect the lid striker.

Look at the small plastic peg on the underside of the lid — this is the striker that activates the lock sensor. If it is cracked, broken, or has shifted, it will not trigger the sensor. Replace it if damaged — lid strikers are inexpensive parts.

  3. Clear any obstructions under the lid.

Check the rim of the tub for any clothing, coins, or debris that might be preventing the lid from closing flush.

  4. Reset the washer.

Unplug the machine from the wall for 1 minute. Plug back in and try to start a cycle. A reset clears a stuck lid lock signal caused by a temporary control board glitch.

When to Call a Professional

If the lid closes fully, the striker is undamaged, and the lid lock light still flashes after a reset, the lid lock switch assembly has failed and needs replacement.
