AE
Samsung Washing Machine
Severity: CriticalWhat it means
Samsung washer AE error means the main control board has lost communication with the sub-board (display / motor controller) — Samsung's 'Communication error'.
The two boards exchange signals constantly during a cycle; when the link breaks, the washer stops and shows AE.
Affected Models
- Samsung Front Load Washer
- Samsung Top Load Washer
- Samsung AddWash Washer
- Samsung EcoBubble Washer
- Samsung QuickDrive Washer
Common Causes
- Ribbon cable between control board and display loose
- Connector corroded by moisture inside the machine
- Wiring damaged by vibration over years of use
- Display board itself failed
- Main control board failed
How to Fix It
-
Power-cycle the washer.
Unplug for 2 full minutes, plug back in.
Communication errors sometimes self-clear after a clean reboot — about a third of AE cases never come back after this. -
Reseat the display ribbon cable.
Open the top panel of the washer (a few screws at the back).
Find the ribbon cable from the main control board to the display.
Pull it out and push it back in firmly.
Loose connections after years of vibration are the most common single AE cause. -
Check for moisture inside.
Inside the top of the washer, look at the boards and connectors for water marks or corrosion.
A failed door seal or detergent-drawer leak that splashed water onto the boards is a common AE root cause; the boards need cleaning and drying or replacement. -
Replace boards (technician).
If reseating cables doesn't fix AE, the display board or main control board has failed and needs replacing.
Get the model number from the sticker behind the door and order the matching board from Samsung parts or a third-party reseller.
When to Call a Professional
AE is a board-level fault.
Reseating cables is owner-doable; if reseating doesn't fix it, board replacement is technician work (£80–£200 for the part on most models).
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Samsung AE error appear randomly mid-cycle?
Mid-cycle AE is almost always vibration shaking a marginal cable connection.
The wash and rinse run at low speeds where the connector survives; the spin cycle's higher vibration jiggles a partly-loose connector enough to break the signal.
Reseating the ribbon cable between the main board and display fixes the majority of these vibration-triggered AE faults.
