HC
Samsung Washing Machine
Severity: ModerateWhat it means
Samsung washer HC error means there's a fault with the water heater — Samsung's 'Heater error'.
The water isn't reaching the target temperature for a hot or warm wash.
Most cases are a heater element that's failed or scaled up, but the temperature sensor or wiring can also cause HC.
Affected Models
- Samsung Front Load Washer
- Samsung Top Load Washer
- Samsung AddWash Washer
- Samsung EcoBubble Washer
- Samsung QuickDrive Washer
Common Causes
- Heater element burned out (open circuit)
- Heater element scaled up — won't transfer heat to water
- Temperature sensor (NTC thermistor) faulty
- Wiring loose between heater and control board
- Control board fault driving the heater incorrectly
How to Fix It
-
Run a cold-only wash to confirm.
Try a cold wash cycle.
If it completes without HC, the heater is the culprit (cold doesn't use it).
If HC still appears on a cold wash, the temperature sensor or control board is at fault, not the heater itself. -
Check household power supply.
Heaters draw 2 kW.
If your circuit can't sustain that — old wiring, undersized fuse — the heater may not get full power and trip HC.
Try the washer on a different circuit if possible. -
Run a service / descale cycle.
Most Samsung washers have a Self Clean or Eco Drum Clean cycle.
Run it with a descaling tablet or a cup of white vinegar.
Heavy limescale on the heater element can prevent heat transfer and trigger HC; descaling restores it. -
Replace the heater (technician).
If cold washes work and Self Clean doesn't help, the heater element needs replacement.
Contact Samsung support or an independent washing-machine engineer; a typical replacement is 45–60 minutes.
Buy a Samsung-branded element to fit the original mounting.
When to Call a Professional
Heater replacement is moderately involved — usually a technician job unless you're comfortable opening the back of a washing machine.
The element costs around £20–£40; labour adds the rest.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Samsung HC error the same as HE?
Yes — same fault, different display generation.
HE was used on older Samsung washers; HC is the newer alphanumeric form.
Both are Samsung's 'Heater error' and the fix is identical: confirm with a cold wash, descale, then replace the element.
