SUDS

Samsung Washing Machine

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

SUDS (also shown as SUD or SD) on a Samsung washer means excessive suds have been detected. The washer pauses to let the foam settle. Reduce detergent use and switch to a HE-rated detergent — non-HE detergent is the leading cause of SUDS errors.

Affected Models

  • Samsung WF45R6100AW
  • Samsung WF50R8500AV
  • Samsung WW90T684DLH
  • Samsung WF8500NHW
  • Samsung WW10T684DLH

Common Causes

  • Non-HE (high efficiency) detergent used in a HE-required washer
  • Too much detergent (dose for hard water in a soft water area)
  • Old detergent that has thickened and become foamier
  • Washing items soaked in soap (e.g., spilled liquid laundry detergent on items)

How to Fix It

  1. Wait — the washer pauses automatically.

When SUDS appears, the washer stops and lets the suds settle. This can take 10–30 minutes. The cycle resumes once suds drop below the threshold. Do not open the door during this period.

  2. Drain and rinse if cycle does not resume.

If after 30 minutes SUDS is still showing, end the cycle and run a Rinse + Spin or a Self Clean cycle with no detergent. This flushes the excess suds out.

  3. Switch to HE detergent.

Samsung washers (and all front-load and modern top-load HE washers) require HE (high efficiency) detergent — look for the 'HE' logo on the bottle. Regular detergent produces too much foam and is the most common SUDS cause.

  4. Reduce the detergent dose.

Most people use too much detergent. Use the smallest cap mark for normal loads. For HE pods, one pod is enough for a normal load. Increase only for very dirty laundry or hard water.

  5. Run a Self Clean cycle monthly.

Detergent and softener residue accumulate inside the washer over time and contribute to ongoing SUDS issues. A monthly Self Clean (or hot empty cycle with washer cleaner) clears the residue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Samsung washer keep showing SUDS even with HE detergent?

If you are using HE detergent and still getting SUDS, you are using too much. Modern HE washers use very little water, so a normal scoop creates too much foam. Use half the recommended dose and increase only if clothes come out smelling stale.

Is the SUDS error damaging my Samsung washer?

No — the pause is protective. Excessive suds can damage the bearings and drum seal over time, so the washer stops to prevent that. SUDS is annoying but not damaging if the underlying detergent issue is fixed.
