F0E2

Whirlpool Washing Machine

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

F0E2 means the washer can't spin the load — either too much weight in the drum, or too many suds preventing proper rotation.
Pull some items out, redistribute what's left, and restart.
If the foam was the issue, run a Rinse + Spin cycle without detergent first.
F0E2 isn't a hardware fault — it's the washer's protection working as designed.

Affected Models

  • Whirlpool WFW5620HW
  • Whirlpool WFW6620HW
  • Whirlpool Cabrio WTW8500
  • Whirlpool Duet front-load
  • Whirlpool 4.5 cu ft front-load

Common Causes

  • Drum overloaded — too many items, especially towels or jeans
  • Single heavy item (comforter, duvet) bunched on one side
  • Excess suds from too much detergent or non-HE detergent
  • Worn suspension springs letting the drum tip during spin (less common)
  • Heavy items wrapped together so weight is concentrated

How to Fix It

  1. Pull items out until the drum is no more than three-quarters full.

If you can't fit your hand between the top of the load and the top of the drum, you've packed it too full.
Towels and jeans are heavy when wet — they use more drum capacity than light fabrics.

  2. Spread the remaining items around the drum.

Don't leave a clump on one side.
Mix sizes — small items between large ones, not all the big stuff together.
The washer can balance an even load but not a lopsided one.

  3. Wash bulky items (duvets, blankets) with a couple of towels.

A single heavy blanket bunches up no matter what you do.
Two or three towels in the load give the spin cycle something to work against and stop the drum tipping.
Use a Bulky or Bedding cycle if your model has one.

  4. Run Rinse + Spin without detergent if you suspect suds.

If you've been using too much detergent or the wrong type, foam fills the drum and stops it spinning.
A plain rinse cycle clears the suds.
Then switch to HE detergent only and use the smallest dose mark on the cap — not the largest.

  5. Press Start to resume.

    After redistributing, press Start.
The washer attempts to rebalance once before spinning.
If F0E2 returns immediately, the load is still uneven — open and shake things out by hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much laundry is the right amount?

Three-quarters full is the rule.
That gives the items room to tumble and the drum room to balance during spin.
Stuffing the drum full is the single biggest cause of F0E2.

Is F0E2 the same as UL (unbalanced load)?

Related but not identical.
UL is purely an unbalanced-load warning — even a normal-sized load can throw UL if it bunches up.
F0E2 is more often genuine overload, where the drum simply can't spin the weight.
The fix is similar (redistribute or remove items), but F0E2 sometimes also points to suds.

Why does F0E2 happen with a comforter washed alone?

A wet comforter can weigh 4–5 kg and clumps into one mass.
The drum can't spin a single heavy clump without tipping.
Add two or three towels and the load balances out — that's the standard trick for washing duvets and blankets in a front-loader.
