F8E2
Whirlpool Washing Machine
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
F8E2 on a Whirlpool washer means the dispenser drawer motor cannot reach its target position — usually a clogged or stuck dispenser. Pull the drawer out, rinse it thoroughly, and clean the cavity behind it. F8E2 typically clears after a clean.
Affected Models
- Whirlpool WTW8127LC
- Whirlpool WFW8620HC
- Whirlpool WTW6120HC
- Whirlpool WFW560CHW
- Whirlpool WTW7120HW
Common Causes
- Detergent and softener residue jamming the dispenser drawer
- Dispenser cap or insert installed incorrectly after a previous clean
- Failed dispenser drawer motor (less common)
- Loose harness connector on the dispenser motor
How to Fix It
-
Open the dispenser drawer fully.
Pull the drawer out of the front of the washer. On most models, there is a release tab that allows the drawer to come out completely — refer to your manual for the specific release.
-
Rinse the drawer thoroughly.
Take the drawer to the sink and rinse with warm water. Use a soft brush (an old toothbrush is ideal) to remove all detergent and softener residue. Dried softener can fully block the dispenser channels.
-
Clean the cavity inside the washer.
Look into the cavity where the drawer goes. Wipe with a damp cloth to remove any residue from the back wall and roof of the cavity. Run hot water from a jug to flush any remaining residue down the drain.
-
Refit the drawer correctly.
Slide the drawer back in until it clicks. Confirm the inserts (siphon caps, softener cup divider) are seated correctly — incorrect installation prevents the drawer from moving smoothly and causes F8E2.
-
Run a Self Clean cycle.
Run an empty hot cycle (Self Clean if available, or Hot Wash with washer cleaner). This flushes residual buildup and confirms F8E2 is clear.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep using my Whirlpool washer with F8E2?
Some F8E2 events allow a cycle to start but it fails when the dispenser is needed. You may be able to use the washer with detergent placed directly in the drum, but the cycle's automatic dispensing will not work. Clean the dispenser as priority.
Why does F8E2 keep coming back?
Recurring F8E2 usually means the dispenser is being clogged faster than you clean it. Switch to liquid detergent only (powder cakes harder), use the recommended dose (not more), and clean the drawer monthly.
