E003
Navien Tankless Water Heater
Severity: CriticalWhat it means
Navien E003 means ignition failure — the unit asked for heat, opened the gas valve, sparked, and never proved a flame.
After a few tries it gives up and locks out, so you get cold water.
The usual causes are simple: a gas shutoff that isn't fully open, low gas supply pressure, or air in the line after a meter shutoff.
Past that it's the igniter, the flame rod, or the gas valve itself.
Affected Models
- Navien NPE-180A, NPE-210A, NPE-240A (Classic)
- Navien NPE-180S, NPE-210S, NPE-240S
- Navien NPE-180A2, NPE-210A2, NPE-240A2 (NPE-2 series)
- Navien NCB-150E, NCB-180E, NCB-210E, NCB-240E combi-boilers
- Navien NPN and NR series tankless units
Common Causes
- Gas shutoff valve to the unit only partly open
- Low gas supply pressure — undersized line, or a regulator that can't keep up when other gas appliances run
- Air in the gas line after the meter or a propane tank was changed
- Propane tank low or the tank shutoff barely cracked open
- Igniter dirty, cracked, or out of position
- Flame sensing (ionization) rod coated or loose
- Gas valve coil failed
How to Fix It
-
Check the gas is actually on.
Trace the gas pipe to the unit and confirm the shutoff handle is fully in line with the pipe — not half-turned.
Make sure the main gas is on and, if you have other gas appliances, that one of them (a stove burner) lights normally.
If nothing gas-fired works, that's a supply problem, not the water heater. -
Bleed air from the line.
If the gas was recently shut off at the meter, a propane tank was swapped, or the unit is brand new, there's air in the pipe.
Reset the unit and let it try to light several times — each attempt purges a little air.
It can take a few cycles before it catches. -
Reset and watch.
Press the power button off, wait ten seconds, power back on, and run a hot tap.
Listen for the click of the igniter and the whoomph of the burner.
If it sparks but never lights, the gas is reaching the valve but not getting through — or the igniter isn't doing its job. -
Have the gas pressure measured.
A plumber or gas tech puts a manometer on the inlet and checks pressure while the unit fires — and while other appliances run.
Navien needs the inlet pressure held within spec under load (typically around 3.5 in WC for natural gas, higher for propane).
An undersized or shared gas line is a very common E003 cause and no amount of resetting fixes it. -
Inspect the igniter and flame rod.
Power off the breaker first.
The igniter and flame-sensing rod sit at the burner.
A cracked ceramic igniter, a sooted tip, or a loose wire all cause repeated ignition failure.
Cleaning or replacing these parts is inexpensive but it's a job for someone comfortable opening the unit. -
If it still won't light, call Navien service.
Gas reaches the valve, the igniter sparks, pressure is in spec, and it still won't catch — that points to the gas valve assembly.
That's a warranty/service-tech repair, not a DIY one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does E003 happen right after my propane tank was filled?
A fresh tank or a just-reopened tank valve leaves air in the line, and a brand-new tank can also have an overfill-protection device that limits flow until it equalizes.
Open the tank valve slowly and all the way, then reset the unit and let it attempt ignition several times.
If it still fails after the line is purged, have the propane regulator and pressure checked.
