Rinnai Tankless Water Heater

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Rinnai code 14 means the thermal fuse opened.
The fuse is a one-shot safety device that interrupts power if internal temperatures climb past the safety limit.
Once it opens, it does not reset itself — the fuse must be replaced.
The cause has to be found first, otherwise the new fuse will open the next time the heater runs hot.
Causes range from a clogged heat exchanger to a flame rod fault keeping the burner on too long.

Affected Models

  • Rinnai RU130
  • Rinnai RU160
  • Rinnai RU180
  • Rinnai RU199
  • Rinnai V53e
  • Rinnai V65e
  • Rinnai V75e

Common Causes

  • Heat exchanger fouled with scale, restricting water flow
  • Burner ran too hot due to flame rod or gas valve fault
  • Recirculation loop short-cycling the heater
  • Inlet water filter screen blocked
  • Combustion fan slowed from dust buildup
  • Thermal fuse aged out — they have a finite lifespan even with no abuse

How to Fix It

  1. Power down and let the unit cool.

    Switch off the dedicated breaker.
    Wait at least 30 minutes.
The heat exchanger sits hot for a long time after a shutdown — there is no point opening anything until the metal is cool enough to touch.

  2. Check the inlet filter.

On the cold-water inlet of the unit there is a small filter screen.
Close the inlet valve, open a hot tap to relieve pressure, then unscrew the filter and rinse it.
A clogged filter starves the heater of flow and is one of the easiest fixes.

  3. Inspect the heat exchanger for scale.

If you live in a hard-water area and have never descaled, the heat exchanger almost certainly has buildup.
Run a vinegar flush through the service valves with a small pump (kits are 80-150 USD).
One hour of circulation strips most scale.

  4. Check the flame rod.

After fully cooling, remove the front cover.
Locate the flame rod (a small metal probe in the burner area).
Wipe with fine emery cloth or 320-grit sandpaper.
A dirty flame rod can cause poor flame sensing, which keeps the gas valve open longer than needed.

  5. Replace the thermal fuse.

The fuse is a small inline component near the heat exchanger.
    Replacement parts are 20-50 USD.
Match the Rinnai part number on the existing fuse — generic fuses with the same temperature rating may not fit the connector.

  6. Run a small test load.

After the new fuse is installed, restore power and run hot water at low flow for 5 minutes.
If code 14 returns within minutes, the underlying cause was missed and you have just sacrificed another fuse.
Stop and have a tech check the gas valve and combustion fan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is code 14 dangerous?

The fuse opening is the safety system doing its job — the unit is now off and not heating.
The dangerous condition is what caused the fuse to open in the first place.
Find that and you are safe.
