F61
Vaillant Water Heater
Severity: CriticalWhat Does This Error Mean?
F61 is a gas valve fault on Vaillant boilers — the control board can't drive the gas valve correctly, or the valve isn't responding as expected.
This is one of the codes you do not try to fix yourself.
Gas valve work requires a Gas Safe registered engineer by law.
Turn the boiler off at the spur switch and call an engineer the same day.
Affected Models
- Vaillant ecoTEC plus
- Vaillant ecoTEC pro
- Vaillant ecoFIT pure
- Vaillant turboMAX
Common Causes
- Gas valve coil failed (open or shorted)
- Wiring between PCB and gas valve damaged or loose
- PCB driver section damaged (often after a power surge)
- Gas valve mechanically stuck (rare but possible)
- Earth bond fault interfering with the valve safety circuit
How to Fix It
-
Don't try to reset and run repeatedly.
F61 isn't a code to keep resetting through.
Each reset attempt energizes the gas valve briefly — if there's a short, that's making things worse.
One reset is acceptable; if it returns immediately, leave the boiler off. -
Turn the boiler off at the spur switch.
Most boilers have a fused spur switch on the wall nearby (usually labelled).
Switch it off.
This cuts power to the boiler completely.
Don't just press the standby button — hard power-off is what you want with F61 active. -
Don't open the boiler casing.
Behind the casing is the gas valve, the gas pipework, and the burner.
This is sealed for a reason.
Even with the boiler off, opening the casing exposes you to gas residue in pipework if anything is loose.
Wait for the engineer. -
Check for any gas smell in the room.
If you smell gas anywhere near the boiler, that's an emergency.
Open windows, leave the property, and call your gas emergency number (in the UK, 0800 111 999).
F61 itself is not a leak code — but combined with a smell, treat it as a leak until proven otherwise. -
Call a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Gas valve replacement is legally Gas Safe-only work.
The engineer will confirm the fault, replace the gas valve and any damaged wiring or PCB section, then run a combustion test before leaving.
Expect 200–400 GBP all-in for parts and labor on a typical ecoTEC.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is F61 dangerous?
The fault itself isn't a gas leak — F61 is the boiler's protection system stopping operation when the gas valve can't be controlled safely.
That said, gas valves are part of the gas-handling chain and any fault here needs a Gas Safe engineer urgently.
Don't attempt DIY work on gas components.
Could F61 be caused by a power surge?
Yes — quite often.
Power surges damage the driver components on the PCB that control the gas valve coil.
The valve itself may be fine, but the board can no longer command it correctly.
The engineer can test which component failed and replace just that part.
