F.65
Vaillant Boiler
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Vaillant F.65 means the PCB itself measured temperature above its safe operating limit.
The boiler shuts down to protect the electronics.
Cause is usually airflow restriction around the boiler — for example, items piled on top, a built-in cupboard with no ventilation, or a heat source nearby.
Less commonly, a PCB component is failing and dissipating more heat than design.
Affected Models
- Vaillant ecoTEC Plus
- Vaillant ecoTEC Pro
- Vaillant ecoFIT Pure
- Vaillant ecoFIT Sustain
Common Causes
- Items stacked on top of the boiler
- Built-in cupboard with no ventilation gaps
- Boiler installed too close to a hot pipe or radiator
- Internal cooling fan (if equipped) failed or dust-clogged
- Component on the PCB failing and running hot
- Ambient room temperature very high (combi in a hot kitchen)
How to Fix It
-
Wait 30 minutes and reset.
F.65 is a temperature-protection event.
Wait for the PCB to cool naturally, then press the reset button.
If F.65 was triggered by a temporary blockage that has been removed, the boiler runs normally. -
Clear items from on top of the boiler.
Modern combi boilers vent some heat upward through their top.
Towels, boxes, anything stacked there blocks the natural cooling.
Clear a 30 cm clearance above the boiler. -
Improve cupboard ventilation.
If the boiler is in a built-in cupboard, the door and sides may need ventilation slots.
Vaillant clearance guidelines specify gaps for airflow.
A joiner can fit louvre vents in the cupboard door for 50-150 GBP. -
Move heat sources away.
If hot pipes or radiators run close to the boiler, insulating those pipes (lagging is 5-10 GBP per metre) reduces ambient temperature around the unit.
-
Engineer step: clean internal cooling.
Some Vaillant models have a small PCB cooling fan or vents inside the casing.
An engineer can vacuum out dust and confirm the fan runs.
This restores cooling without parts. -
Engineer step: PCB inspection.
If F.65 returns repeatedly with adequate ventilation, the PCB itself is failing.
Specific components (typically the power supply or driver section) run hot when ageing.
PCB replacement is 200-400 GBP. -
Final check.
After improving ventilation or replacement, run the boiler for a full heating cycle.
F.65 should not return.
If it does, call an engineer for further diagnosis.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will F.65 damage the boiler if I keep resetting?
Repeated overheat events stress PCB components and shorten their life.
Resetting without addressing the cause is the worst pattern.
Fix the airflow first, reset second.
