F8
Worcester Bosch Water Heater
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
F8 is a communication fault between two parts of the boiler's electronics — usually the main PCB and the user interface board.
It's almost always a connector that's worked loose or a single component that's failed after a power surge.
Power-cycle once.
If F8 returns, it's a Gas Safe engineer call.
Repair is usually a connector reseat or a single board replacement.
Affected Models
- Worcester Bosch Greenstar 25i
- Worcester Bosch Greenstar 30i
- Worcester Bosch Greenstar 4000
- Worcester Bosch CDi compact
Common Causes
- Loose ribbon cable between main PCB and display board
- Power surge damaged a communication chip
- Moisture inside the boiler casing affecting the PCB
- Display board itself failed
- Main PCB communication section failed
How to Fix It
-
Power-cycle the boiler.
Spur switch off for 30 seconds.
Back on.
Wait for full boot — display should show normal status.
F8 may not return if it was a transient comms hiccup.
If it returns within minutes, it's a real fault. -
Look at the display.
Is the display dim, flickering, or showing unusual characters?
If yes, the display board is the failing component.
If the display looks normal but F8 still shows, the main PCB or the connector between them is the issue.
Note this for the engineer — it speeds diagnosis. -
Check for storms or recent power events.
F8 often appears right after a thunderstorm or after a brief power outage.
If you've had either recently, mention it to the engineer.
It's common enough that 'happened after a storm' tells the engineer to check the comms chips first. -
Don't try to reseat the cable yourself.
Opening the boiler casing, even just to access the ribbon cable, is risky if you don't know what you're doing.
The display board is just above the gas valve area in many Worcester models.
Save it for someone who's been there before. -
Call a Gas Safe engineer.
F8 fixes range from free (cable reseat) to 200 GBP (display board replacement) to 300+ GBP (main PCB).
The engineer can usually pinpoint which on the first visit.
If the boiler is past 10 years old and the main PCB has failed, replacement boiler may be more economical than repair.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is F8 always a serious fault?
No — about half of F8 events turn out to be a loose ribbon cable that just needs reseating.
That's a free fix once an engineer is on site.
The other half are component failures (display board or PCB) which cost more.
Don't assume the worst — book the diagnostic and see.
Will F8 affect hot water and heating?
Yes — both stop on F8.
Without internal comms, the boiler can't safely run any function.
If you're without hot water for more than a day in winter, ask the engineer about emergency repair priority — most companies offer same-day or next-day for boiler-no-heat situations.
