Red Light

Coway Air Purifier

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

A red light on a Coway air purifier has two possible meanings: the air quality sensor detected very poor air quality (real-time warning, clears automatically when air improves), or the filter needs replacement (stays on until filter is changed and reset). A red filter light does not turn off automatically — you must replace the filter and press Reset.

Affected Models

  • Coway AP-1512HH Mighty
  • Coway Airmega 200M
  • Coway Airmega 300
  • Coway Airmega 400
  • Coway Airmega 300S
  • Coway Airmega 400S

Common Causes

  • Air quality indicator red — real-time sensor detecting high particulate or pollutant levels
  • Filter replacement indicator red — filter has reached its service interval (6-12 months)
  • Cooking fumes, cleaning sprays, or smoke temporarily triggering the air quality sensor
  • Filter indicator not reset after a previous filter replacement

How to Fix It

  1. Identify which light is red — air quality or filter.

Coway purifiers have two indicator systems. The air quality light (usually a coloured ring or circle on the front): red means current air quality is poor — this will clear when the air improves. The filter indicator light (separate button area): red means the filter needs replacement — this does not clear on its own.

  2. If the air quality light is red: run the purifier at Turbo or high speed.

The air quality sensor measures particulates in real time. Running the purifier at high speed will clean the air faster. The light should change from red to orange, yellow, and eventually blue/green as air quality improves. If it stays red for more than 30 minutes in a well-ventilated room, the sensor may have debris on it.

  3. If the filter indicator is red: replace the filters.

Remove the back cover of the Coway. Replace the pre-filter (washable, rinse and dry), the carbon deodorisation filter, and the HEPA filter. The pre-filter can be washed — the HEPA and carbon filters must be replaced, not washed.

  4. Reset the filter indicator after replacement.

After installing new filters, press and hold the Reset button (or the Filter Reset button) for 3-5 seconds until the indicator turns off. On the Airmega 300S and 400S: reset via the IoCare app under Device > Filter Management > Reset. The indicator will not clear on its own.

  5. Clean the air quality sensor if it shows red constantly.

The particulate sensor on the side or back of the purifier can accumulate dust, causing it to read poor air quality permanently. Locate the sensor inlet (a small hole or slot), and use a dry cotton swab to gently clean the sensor chamber. A dirty sensor gives false positive readings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do Coway filters need replacing?

Coway HEPA and carbon filters should be replaced every 6-12 months under 24/7 use. The pre-filter (mesh) should be washed monthly. The built-in filter indicator tracks usage hours and alerts you when replacement is due. In heavily polluted areas or homes with pets, replacement every 6 months is recommended.

Why does my Coway air quality light show red even when the windows are closed?

Common indoor sources that trigger a red air quality reading: cooking (especially frying or grilling), scented candles, cleaning sprays, hairspray, paint, or a pet in the room. If the red reading appears persistently with no obvious source, clean the particulate sensor — dust on the sensor lens causes false high readings.
