F1
Dyson Air Purifier
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Dyson shows F1 on the LCD when the filter has reached its calculated end of life — based on usage hours and air-quality data the unit collected.
It is a maintenance reminder, not a fault.
The unit continues to run.
The fix is to fit a new genuine Dyson filter and reset the indicator from the remote or the Dyson Link app.
Affected Models
- Dyson Pure Cool TP04
- Dyson Pure Hot+Cool HP04
- Dyson Purifier Cool TP07
- Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP07
- Dyson Purifier Big+Quiet BP02
- Dyson HP09 / TP09 Formaldehyde models
Common Causes
- Filter usage hours reached the spec interval (typically 12 months at 12 hours/day)
- Air quality in the space caused early filter loading
- Unit ran longer than expected since last replacement
- Counter never reset after a previous swap
- Recent firmware update reset the schedule on some models
How to Fix It
-
Order the correct filter.
Match the filter to your model exactly — Dyson sells different filters per model family.
Genuine HEPA+Carbon combo filters are 60-100 USD.
Aftermarket filters fit but are not certified by Dyson and may not last as long. -
Power off and unplug.
Switch the unit off and pull the plug.
Wait until the fan stops before opening the housing.
Working on a powered unit risks fingers in the bearing area. -
Open the filter housing.
Most Dyson purifiers have two side panels that release with a small button or a slight squeeze.
The HEPA layer is on one side, the activated carbon layer on the other.
Some models combine them. -
Note orientation and remove.
Take a phone photo of the old filter before removing it.
The arrows on the side must point toward the air intake on the new filter.
Wrong orientation reduces filtration efficiency dramatically. -
Fit the new filter.
Slide in the new filter with arrows correctly oriented.
Press the side panel back on until it clicks.
Repeat for the second filter if your model uses both. -
Reset the indicator.
On the Dyson remote, hold the Power button for about 6 seconds.
The display flashes — filter life is now reset to 100%.
In the Dyson Link app, go to Settings → Filter Life → Reset Filter Life. -
Confirm in the app.
Open the Dyson Link app.
Filter life percentage should now show 100%.
If it still shows the old value, force-quit the app and reopen — sync usually takes a moment after a hardware reset.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I clean the old filter and reuse it?
No — HEPA fibres trap particles that cannot be washed out.
Vacuuming releases captured pollutants back into the air.
The activated carbon in the combo filter saturates and stops absorbing.
Replacement is the only proper fix.
