F2

Dyson Air Purifier

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Dyson F2 means the filter is past its end-of-life threshold — beyond F1, which is just a reminder.
The unit may reduce fan speed or limit operation until the filter is replaced.
Air quality readings on the LCD are also less reliable past F2 because the filter is letting particles through.
Replace the filter and reset the indicator to restore full operation.

Affected Models

  • Dyson Pure Cool TP04
  • Dyson Pure Hot+Cool HP04
  • Dyson Purifier Cool TP07
  • Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP07
  • Dyson Purifier Big+Quiet BP02
  • Dyson HP09 / TP09 Formaldehyde models

Common Causes

  • Filter usage well past the F1 reminder threshold
  • Heavy-pollution environment (wildfire smoke, near a busy road)
  • Filter never replaced since unboxing
  • Counter not reset after the last replacement
  • Aftermarket filter that loaded faster than expected

How to Fix It

  1. Order the correct filter.

    Match exactly to your model.
Order a genuine Dyson HEPA+Carbon for best results — 60-100 USD per filter.
Some models use two separate filters (HEPA layer and Carbon layer).

  2. Power off and unplug.

Switch the unit off and pull the plug.
Wait until the fan stops before opening the housing.

  3. Open the housing.

Press the side buttons on most TP/HP models — the side panels release.
The filters slide out with a gentle pull.
Note the arrows for orientation before removing.

  4. Insert the new filter correctly.

Arrows point toward the inside of the unit (toward the air intake).
Press the side panel back on until it clicks home.
A loose panel makes the unit louder and reduces filtration.

  5. Reset the filter life.

On the remote, hold Power for 6 seconds.
The display flashes and filter life resets.
Or use the Dyson Link app: Settings → Filter Life → Reset.
Without a reset, the F2 alert returns immediately even with a brand-new filter.

  6. Run a fresh test.

    Set the unit to Auto.
    Watch the LCD particle reading.
It should drop within 15-30 minutes as the new filter pulls particles out of the room.
No drop = filter installed wrong (orientation) or alert was not actually filter-related.

  7. Adjust replacement schedule.

If F2 keeps appearing well before the 12-month mark, the unit is in a high-pollution environment.
Plan filter replacement at 6-9 months instead.
Buy filters in pairs to keep spares on hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the unit still clean air with F2 showing?

It tries, but the filter is beyond its useful life.
HEPA fibres pack with particles and let smaller particles through.
Carbon saturates and stops absorbing gases.
Running on F2 wastes electricity for marginal cleaning — replace the filter.
