E22

Bosch Oven

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Bosch oven E22 means the meat probe (core temperature probe) or its socket has a fault. If you do not have a meat probe inserted, E22 may appear if the probe socket is dirty — clean it with a dry cloth. If you are using the meat probe and E22 appears, remove the probe and reinsert it firmly — a loose connection triggers this error.

Affected Models

  • Bosch Series 4 Oven with Meat Probe
  • Bosch Series 6 Oven with Meat Probe
  • Bosch Series 8 Oven with Meat Probe
  • Bosch HBG Series
  • Bosch HBA Series

Common Causes

  • Meat probe not fully inserted into the oven socket — poor contact triggers E22
  • Probe socket inside the oven is contaminated with food grease or moisture
  • Meat probe cable damaged — caught in the oven door or pressed against a heating element
  • Probe socket contacts corroded or burnt from high-temperature use
  • Meat probe NTC resistor has failed at end of life

How to Fix It

  1. Remove and reinsert the meat probe

Pull the meat probe out of its socket on the oven wall and reinsert it firmly. The connector should click slightly into place. An improperly seated probe is the most common cause of E22.

  2. Clean the probe socket

With the oven off and cool, use a dry cotton bud to clean inside the probe socket. Remove any grease or moisture that has accumulated. Do not use water or spray cleaners — moisture in the socket triggers E22.

  3. Check the probe cable

Inspect the probe cable from the tip to the connector. Look for kinks, melted insulation, or areas where the cable has been pinched by the oven door. Any damage to the cable requires probe replacement.

  4. Test with a spare probe

If you have access to another Bosch meat probe for the same model, plug it in. If E22 clears with the spare probe, your probe has failed. If E22 persists with a new probe, the socket itself is faulty.

  5. Disable the probe function if unused

If you do not use the meat probe and E22 is showing without a probe inserted, check that the probe sensing function is not active in the oven menu. Some models can be set to expect a probe even when one is not connected.

When to Call a Professional

If cleaning the socket and testing with a spare probe does not resolve E22, the socket needs replacing. This requires removing the oven rear panel and is best left to a Bosch-certified technician.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bosch oven E22 with no meat probe inserted — why?

Some Bosch oven models show E22 if the probe socket has moisture or grease in it, even without a probe. Clean the socket with a dry cotton bud. If the socket is visibly corroded or burnt, it needs replacing.

Can I use my Bosch oven normally when E22 is showing?

If E22 relates to the meat probe only and the main oven temperature sensor is working, the oven will still heat. However, any cooking function that uses the core temperature probe will not work until E22 is resolved.

Where is the meat probe socket on a Bosch oven?

On most Bosch Series 4 and above ovens, the probe socket is a round 6 mm socket on the upper left or right inside wall of the oven cavity. It is usually marked with a probe or thermometer icon.
