E23

Bosch Oven

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Bosch oven E23 means the convection fan motor has stopped working or is drawing too much current. First check the fan blades are not physically obstructed — a piece of fallen food behind the fan plate can jam the motor. If nothing is blocking the fan, the motor itself has failed and needs replacing.

Affected Models

  • Bosch Series 2 Fan Oven
  • Bosch Series 4 Fan Oven
  • Bosch Series 6 Fan Oven
  • Bosch Series 8 Fan Oven
  • Bosch Pyrolytic Fan Oven

Common Causes

  • Fan motor bearings worn out from extended use, causing the motor to seize
  • Piece of food or cookware fragment fallen behind the fan plate and jamming the fan blades
  • Fan motor winding burnt out after very high temperature or repeated pyrolysis use
  • Wiring connecting the fan motor to the control board melted or disconnected from heat
  • Control board triac driving the fan motor has failed (less common)

How to Fix It

  1. Check for physical obstruction

With the oven cool and power disconnected, remove the fan cover plate (usually secured by a nut in the centre). Check behind the plate for food debris, broken enamel, or other objects jamming the fan blades.

  2. Try to spin the fan blades by hand

After removing the fan cover plate, try to rotate the fan blades by hand. They should turn freely with slight resistance. If the blades are stiff or seized, the motor bearings have failed.

  3. Check the fan motor wiring

Trace the two wires from the fan motor to their connectors at the back of the oven. Look for melted insulation, loose connectors, or burnt contacts. A loose connector causes intermittent E23.

  4. Replace the fan motor

Order the correct fan motor for your oven model (found on the rating plate inside the door frame). Disconnect the wiring, remove the fan blade, unscrew the motor, and fit the new motor in reverse order. Cost is typically $35–70.

  5. Test after replacement

Select a fan-assisted function (shown by a fan symbol) and set to 150°C. Listen for the fan to start within 30 seconds of the oven reaching temperature. If silent, recheck the wiring connections.

When to Call a Professional

Replacing a Bosch oven fan motor requires removing the oven rear inner panel. If you are not comfortable working inside the oven cavity with the power disconnected, book a Bosch-certified technician.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bosch oven heats up but E23 keeps appearing — is the fan broken?

If the oven heats on conventional mode but E23 appears on fan-assisted mode, the fan motor has failed. The heating elements work independently of the fan, so the oven can still partially function — but fan-assisted cooking will not work.

How long does a Bosch oven fan motor last?

Bosch oven fan motors typically last 10–15 years under normal use. Heavy use, frequent pyrolysis cycles, and cooking above 250°C accelerate motor bearing wear.

Can I cook without the fan if I have Bosch oven E23?

Yes — on most Bosch ovens, conventional heating (top and bottom element only, no fan) still works with E23. Switch to a conventional baking symbol instead of the fan symbol and allow extra cooking time.
