E25

Bosch Oven

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

Bosch oven E25 means the door lock motor or latch mechanism has a fault — on pyrolysis (self-cleaning) models, the door cannot lock and the self-clean cycle cannot start. Check that nothing is blocking the door from closing fully — even a slight gap prevents the lock from engaging. If the door closes fully but E25 appears, the lock motor or latch mechanism needs replacing.

Affected Models

  • Bosch Series 6 Pyrolytic Oven
  • Bosch Series 8 Pyrolytic Oven
  • Bosch HBG634 Series
  • Bosch HBN636 Series
  • Bosch Self-Clean Built-In Ovens

Common Causes

  • Door lock motor stalled or burnt out from repeated pyrolysis cycles at extreme temperatures
  • Door hinge or seal preventing the door from reaching the fully closed position needed for lock engagement
  • Lock latch mechanism worn or bent, preventing correct engagement with the locking pin
  • Carbon deposits from pyrolysis cycles jamming the locking mechanism
  • Wiring to the door lock motor failed — damaged by the extreme heat of pyrolysis (450°C+)

How to Fix It

  1. Check the door closes fully

Push the oven door firmly closed. Look at the door gap around the entire frame — it should be even and minimal. If the door is slightly ajar on one side, the hinge or door weight has shifted and needs adjusting.

  2. Inspect the door seal

Check the oven door gasket (the rope-like seal around the inner door frame). If the seal has slipped out of its channel or is bunched up, it prevents the door from reaching the lock position.

  3. Clean the lock mechanism

With the oven cool and power disconnected, inspect the lock mechanism at the top of the oven cavity. Clear any carbon deposits or debris using a stiff brush — pyrolysis leaves a fine ash that can jam the mechanism.

  4. Check the latch manually

With the oven door fully closed and power disconnected, gently try to operate the lock bar at the top by hand. If it moves freely, the motor has failed. If it is stiff or jammed, the mechanism needs cleaning or replacement.

  5. Replace the door lock motor

The door lock motor assembly is located above the oven cavity and accessed from the top of the oven. Disconnect the wiring, remove the mounting screws, and fit the replacement. Cost is typically $40–85.

When to Call a Professional

A faulty door lock on a pyrolytic oven means the self-clean cycle cannot run safely. Replace the lock motor as soon as possible. If the oven is under warranty, contact Bosch before any repair attempt.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still bake with Bosch oven E25?

If E25 relates only to the pyrolysis door lock, normal baking functions usually still work. The oven blocks the self-clean cycle but standard cooking modes up to 250°C are generally not affected.

Bosch oven E25 — is it safe to use the oven at all?

Standard cooking up to 250°C is generally safe — the door lock is only required for pyrolysis (450°C+). Do not attempt to run a self-clean cycle with E25 active.

The lock is stuck and the oven door will not open — what do I do?

Turn off the mains power and wait 10 minutes for the lock motor to release. If the door remains locked after a power reset, do not force it open — contact Bosch service, as forcing the door can break the hinges.
