E29

Bosch Refrigerator

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Bosch fridge E29 means the internal evaporator fan motor has failed or is blocked by ice. Listen for fan noise inside the fridge when the door is closed — the evaporator fan should run continuously when the compressor is on. If the fan has stopped, first check for ice build-up around the evaporator (a defrost fault often precedes E29). If no ice is blocking the fan, the motor has failed.

Affected Models

  • Bosch Series 2 Fridge-Freezer
  • Bosch Series 4 Fridge-Freezer
  • Bosch Series 6 Fridge-Freezer
  • Bosch NoFrost KGN Series
  • Bosch Series 8 Fridge-Freezer

Common Causes

  • Evaporator fan motor bearings worn out — the motor runs constantly and bearings fail over time
  • Fan blades frozen solid due to excessive ice build-up from a defrost system fault
  • Fan blade cracked or broken, causing the motor to overload and trip
  • Wiring connector to the fan motor has corroded or come loose
  • Ice fallen from a shelf has jammed the fan blades

How to Fix It

  1. Listen for the fan

Open the fridge or freezer, press the door switch to make the fridge think the door is closed, and listen for fan noise from inside the compartment. If you hear nothing while the compressor is running, the fan has stopped.

  2. Check for ice blocking the fan

If the fridge has had cooling problems for several weeks before E29 appeared, ice from a failed defrost cycle may have grown around the fan. Turn off the fridge and allow 24 hours for the ice to melt before inspecting the fan.

  3. Access the evaporator fan

Remove the freezer shelves and the rear plastic panel (4–6 screws). The evaporator fan is directly behind this panel — a small 2–4 blade fan mounted next to the evaporator coil.

  4. Check the fan blades

Try spinning the fan blades by hand — they should rotate freely. Stiff or seized blades indicate worn bearings. A broken or chipped blade will cause the fan to vibrate and eventually stop.

  5. Replace the evaporator fan motor

Disconnect the wiring connector, remove the fan motor mounting screws, and slide the fan blade off the shaft. Fit the new motor in reverse order. Cost is typically $20–45. Also address any underlying defrost fault to prevent the fan from freezing again.

When to Call a Professional

Replacing the evaporator fan requires accessing the evaporator area behind the freezer rear panel. If ice build-up was the cause, also check the defrost heater — a failed defrost system will cause the fan to freeze again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bosch fridge E29 — fridge section warm but freezer cold — why?

The evaporator fan normally pushes cold air from the freezer into the fridge section. When the fan fails, the freezer stays cold (it is next to the evaporator) but the fridge warms up because cold air is no longer being circulated.

How do I know if E29 is the fan or a defrost problem?

If E28 appeared before E29, the defrost failure caused ice to block the fan. Fix E28 first, allow the ice to melt, then check if the fan runs normally. If the fan was physically damaged, replace it as well.

Bosch fridge making a grinding noise then E29 — what happened?

Grinding before E29 is the sound of failing fan motor bearings. The motor ran with worn bearings until it finally seized. Replace the fan motor promptly — a seized motor can burn out the control board relay that powers it.
