Descale / CALC CLEAN Light
De'Longhi Coffee Machine
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
The Descale or CALC CLEAN light on a De'Longhi coffee machine means calcium and mineral deposits from hard water have built up inside the boiler and water circuit. This is routine maintenance — the machine works fine but scale reduces performance over time. Running the descale cycle with De'Longhi EcoDecalk solution clears the light.
Affected Models
- De'Longhi Magnifica series
- De'Longhi Dinamica series
- De'Longhi PrimaDonna series
- De'Longhi Nespresso machines
- De'Longhi Dedica series
Common Causes
- Normal calcium buildup from hard water — triggered after approximately 200 uses or 2-3 months
- Descale cycle was skipped previously and scale has accumulated further
- Machine detects reduced water flow due to scale partially blocking the circuit
How to Fix It
-
Purchase De'Longhi EcoDecalk descaler from a supermarket or appliance store. Fill the water tank with 1 litre of water and add the recommended amount of EcoDecalk.
Do not use vinegar — it leaves a persistent taste and smell. Citric acid is an acceptable alternative if EcoDecalk is unavailable: dissolve 1 tablespoon in 1 litre of water.
-
Enter descale mode. The exact method varies by model: on most Magnifica and Dinamica machines, press and hold the Steam button or a dedicated Descale button for 5 seconds.
Refer to your machine's manual or the De'Longhi website for your specific model's procedure. The machine will guide you through the cycle with flashing lights or display prompts.
-
Follow the descale cycle — the machine pumps the solution through in stages and pauses between them. Place a large container (at least 1.5 litres) under the steam wand and spout.
The full cycle takes 25-35 minutes. Do not interrupt it — stopping mid-cycle can leave descaler inside the boiler.
-
After the descale cycle completes, run two full tanks of fresh water through the machine using the rinse function to flush all descaler residue.
Thorough rinsing is essential — descaler residue affects coffee taste and can be an irritant if consumed.
When to Call a Professional
Descaling is routine home maintenance. If the descale light stays on after a completed descale cycle, repeat the cycle once — the first cycle may not have cleared all scale. If the light stays on after two full cycles, the scale sensor may need a reset by a De'Longhi service technician.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I descale a De'Longhi machine?
De'Longhi recommends descaling every 2-3 months in hard water areas. The machine tracks usage and triggers the light automatically — follow its prompt rather than a fixed calendar schedule.
Can I use the machine while the descale light is on?
Yes, the machine continues to work normally. However, ignoring the light for too long allows scale to build up further, which can affect coffee temperature, flow rate, and eventually damage the boiler.
