No Water / Empty Water Tank
De'Longhi Coffee Machine
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
If a De'Longhi machine shows a no water or empty tank warning when the tank is full, the tank is not seated correctly, there is an air lock in the water circuit, or the water inlet is blocked. Removing and firmly reinserting the tank, then activating the hot water or steam function to prime the pump, clears most cases.
Affected Models
- De'Longhi Magnifica series
- De'Longhi Dinamica series
- De'Longhi PrimaDonna series
- De'Longhi Dedica series
- De'Longhi Nespresso machines
Common Causes
- Water tank not pushed down fully — the valve at the base must seat into the machine inlet
- Air lock in the water line after the tank ran completely dry
- Water filter inside the tank has become clogged and is restricting flow
- Scale or debris blocking the water inlet valve in the machine body
- Tank lid not removed — some models require the lid off for correct seating
How to Fix It
-
Remove the water tank completely, check the rubber valve on its base is undamaged, and reinsert it firmly until it clicks or sits flush.
The valve at the tank base must engage precisely with the machine inlet. A tank that looks seated but is 2-3 mm too high will trigger the empty warning.
-
Prime the pump to clear an air lock. Activate the hot water or steam function briefly — this forces the pump to push air out of the line and draw water in.
After the tank runs dry, air enters the water circuit and the pump cannot prime itself. Keep the hot water button held until water starts flowing steadily.
-
Remove and rinse the water filter inside the tank under cold water. Soak it for 5 minutes, then reinsert.
A clogged filter restricts water flow enough to trigger the empty tank sensor. If the filter is more than 2 months old, replace it rather than just rinsing it.
-
Wipe the water inlet area inside the machine where the tank base connects, using a damp cloth to remove any mineral deposits.
Scale on the inlet can prevent the tank valve from forming a proper seal. A cloth lightly moistened with white vinegar dissolves scale effectively.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the no water light come on only after the machine has been idle overnight?
When the boiler cools down overnight, slight pressure changes in the water circuit can cause a small air pocket to form. Activating the steam or hot water function for a few seconds in the morning primes the pump and clears it.
Do I need to use the De'Longhi water filter?
The filter is optional but recommended in hard water areas — it reduces scale buildup and improves coffee taste. You can remove it temporarily to diagnose a no-water error without affecting the machine.
