C1

Instant Pot Pressure Cooker

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Instant Pot C1 means the inner temperature sensor has detected a fault. This sensor reads the temperature of the food or liquid inside the pot during cooking. The most common fix is re-seating the inner pot — the sensor needs proper contact with the pot base.

Affected Models

  • Instant Pot Duo
  • Instant Pot Duo Plus
  • Instant Pot Ultra
  • Instant Pot Pro
  • Instant Pot Lux

Common Causes

  • Inner pot not seated flat in the cooker base — the sensor needs contact with the pot bottom
  • Cooking without sufficient liquid — the sensor cannot read temperature accurately in a near-dry pot
  • Food debris or residue on the bottom of the inner pot or the sensor contact area in the base
  • Inner temperature sensor probe damaged by impact, moisture, or a prior overheating event
  • Control board fault causing incorrect sensor readings

How to Fix It

  1. Remove the inner pot completely. Check the bottom of the pot and the sensor contact point in the cooker base for any food debris or residue.

Even a thin layer of burnt residue on the sensor contact can prevent it from reading the pot temperature correctly and trigger C1.

  2. Wipe the bottom of the inner pot and the inside of the cooker base with a damp cloth. Clean the sensor contact point gently — do not use abrasives or submerge the base.

The sensor contact is a small raised point or plate at the centre of the base. Make sure it is completely clean and dry before reseating the pot.

  3. Lower the inner pot straight down into the base so it sits perfectly flat. Rotate it slightly if needed until it sits flush with no rocking.

If the pot is even slightly off-centre, the sensor may not make full contact and C1 will persist.

  4. Add at least 1 cup (240ml) of thin liquid (water or broth) to the pot before starting any pressure cook program.

The temperature sensor reads liquid temperature. Cooking with too little liquid or very thick contents causes the sensor to return out-of-range readings.

  5. If C1 persists after cleaning and re-seating with liquid, unplug the unit for 10 minutes and try again. If it still shows C1, contact Instant Pot support.

Do not use the unit while C1 is active. Pressure cooking without a working temperature sensor is unsafe.

When to Call a Professional

If re-seating the pot and cleaning the base does not clear C1, the temperature sensor or control board needs replacing. Contact Instant Pot support at instantpot.com — the unit may be covered under the 1-year warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still use the Instant Pot while C1 is showing?

No. Do not use the unit while C1 is active. A pressure cooker without reliable temperature monitoring cannot be used safely. Unplug it and contact Instant Pot support before using again.

Is C1 covered by the Instant Pot warranty?

Yes, if your unit is within the 1-year limited warranty. Contact instantpot.com/support with your model number and proof of purchase. Instant Pot typically offers a replacement rather than a repair for sensor faults.
