C2
Instant Pot Pressure Cooker
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Instant Pot C2 means the high-side temperature sensor in the heating unit has a fault. This sensor monitors the temperature of the heating plate itself rather than the food inside the pot. C2 often appears after an overheating event — fully cooling the unit and restarting usually clears it.
Affected Models
- Instant Pot Duo
- Instant Pot Duo Plus
- Instant Pot Ultra
- Instant Pot Pro
- Instant Pot Lux
Common Causes
- Heating unit overheated from cooking without enough liquid — the sensor thermal limit was exceeded
- Temperature sensor probe damaged by the overheating event itself
- Wiring between the sensor and the control board loose or disconnected
- Control board fault misreading the sensor signal
- Unit dropped or impacted, damaging the internal sensor connection
How to Fix It
-
Unplug the Instant Pot immediately and let it cool for at least 30 minutes. Do not try to restart a hot unit — the sensor will not reset until the heating plate has cooled.
C2 from an overheating event almost always clears once the unit is fully cool. Rushing the cooldown by placing the unit near a fan or on a cold surface speeds this up.
-
Once completely cool, plug back in and press On without the inner pot. If C2 clears at startup, the issue was heat-related and the sensor has reset.
If C2 appears immediately on a cold unit, the fault is not heat-related — the sensor or board has failed.
-
If C2 appeared mid-cook, check whether you had at least 1 cup of thin liquid and that the sealing ring was seated correctly. Insufficient liquid is the leading cause of overheating that triggers C2.
Thick sauces, pastes, or bean dishes cooked without extra water are the most common causes of the overheating that leads to C2.
-
Inspect the bottom of the cooker base for any burned food residue. Clean it gently with a damp cloth — do not use abrasives or submerge the base unit.
Carbonised food residue on the heating plate can cause incorrect sensor readings even after the unit has cooled.
-
If C2 persists after full cooling and cleaning, contact Instant Pot support at instantpot.com with your model number and a description of what happened before the error appeared.
One overheating event rarely causes permanent damage to a sensor. Repeated C2 errors suggest a hardware fault.
When to Call a Professional
If C2 appears on a cold unit that has not been overheated, or persists after full cooling, the sensor or control board has failed. Contact Instant Pot support — this is a warranty repair.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between C1 and C2 on Instant Pot?
C1 is a fault with the inner pot temperature sensor — the one that reads the food temperature. C2 is a fault with the heating unit temperature sensor — the one that monitors the heater plate. C2 is more likely to appear after an overheating event; C1 is more often caused by the inner pot being unseated or the base contact being dirty.
How do I stop C2 from happening again?
Always use at least 1 cup of thin liquid for pressure cooking. Never cook completely dry ingredients without liquid. Respond to every Burn notice immediately — Burn is the early warning that overheating is beginning. Addressing Burn prevents the temperature escalation that causes C2.
