C7
Instant Pot Pressure Cooker
Severity: CriticalWhat Does This Error Mean?
Instant Pot C7 means the heating element — the plate at the bottom of the cooker base — has a fault. This is usually a hardware failure caused by burning out from repeated dry cooking, or by an electrical fault in the heating circuit. C7 almost always requires a warranty repair or replacement unit.
Affected Models
- Instant Pot Duo
- Instant Pot Duo Plus
- Instant Pot Ultra
- Instant Pot Pro
- Instant Pot Lux
Common Causes
- Heating element burned out from repeated dry cooking or multiple overheating events
- Electrical fault in the heating circuit inside the cooker base
- Wiring between the heating plate and the control board loose or disconnected
- Control board failure causing incorrect heater circuit readings
- Unit dropped, causing a physical break in the heating element connection
How to Fix It
-
Unplug the unit immediately and allow it to cool fully. Inspect the bottom of the cooker base for discolouration, warping, or a visible burn mark on the heating plate.
Visible damage to the heating plate confirms the element has failed. Even without visible damage, a C7 on a cold unit indicates an internal electrical fault.
-
Try a full reset: unplug the unit for 10–15 minutes, then plug back in. Some C7 errors caused by a temporary electrical fault (such as a power surge) can clear with a reset.
If C7 clears after a reset and does not return after normal cooking, a power transient was likely the cause. Consider using a surge-protected power strip.
-
Check that the inner pot is properly seated and sitting flat. A severely misaligned inner pot creating contact between the pot sides and the heating element can cause abnormal current readings.
This is a rare cause of C7 but easy to check. Re-seat the pot and try restarting.
-
If C7 persists after a reset, do not attempt to open the cooker base or repair the heating element yourself. The heating element operates at mains voltage and the base is sealed.
Opening the base voids the warranty and creates a serious electrical safety risk. Instant Pot repair is not intended to be user-serviceable at this level.

When to Call a Professional
C7 is almost always a hardware fault that requires professional service or unit replacement. Do not use the unit. Contact Instant Pot support at instantpot.com — this is covered under the 1-year warranty and Instant Pot typically offers replacement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I repair the Instant Pot heating element myself?
No. The heating element operates at mains voltage and the cooker base is sealed for safety. Do not attempt to open or repair it. Contact Instant Pot support for a warranty replacement — this is the correct path.
How do I prevent C7 from happening?
Always use at least 1 cup of thin liquid for pressure cooking and never cook completely dry ingredients under pressure. Respond to every Burn notice by cancelling and adding liquid. Repeated dry cooking events are the primary cause of heating element failure over time.
