P0711

Universal (All Makes) Vehicle (OBD-II)

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

P0711 means the Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) sensor is returning readings the TCM considers implausible — for example, reading constant cold while the transmission is clearly warm. The TCM uses fluid temperature to adjust shift timing and torque converter lockup. With bad data, shifts may feel harsh or the converter may lock at the wrong time.

Affected Models

  • All vehicles 1996+ with automatic transmissions
  • Common in GM trucks with 4L60E/4L65E
  • Common in Ford 5R55 and 6R80
  • Common in Chrysler 8HP and Toyota A750/AB60

Common Causes

  • Failed TFT sensor (most common cause — sensor wears electrically over time)
  • Wiring damage or pinched harness near the transmission
  • Connector corrosion at the TFT sensor or TCM
  • Contaminated transmission fluid affecting sensor accuracy
  • Internal valve body fault (less common)

How to Fix It

  1. Pull the freeze frame data — note the temperature reported when the code set.

Implausible values (e.g., -40°F or 320°F) confirm the sensor itself is faulty. Reasonable values mean the issue is performance, not failure.

  2. Check the transmission fluid level and condition.

Low or burned fluid affects the sensor reading. Top up with the correct fluid type before further diagnosis.

  3. Inspect the TFT sensor connector.

Connector corrosion is a common cause of intermittent P0711. Disconnect, inspect for green oxidation, clean with electrical cleaner, and reconnect.

  4. Test sensor resistance.

Most TFT sensors are NTC thermistors with predictable resistance vs temperature curves. A multimeter test against the spec confirms whether the sensor itself is faulty.

  5. Replace the sensor if testing confirms failure.

External sensors are easy DIY. Internal sensors (in the valve body) require transmission pan drop and fluid replacement — book a shop unless experienced.

When to Call a Professional

TFT sensor replacement varies by vehicle — on some it is part of the internal solenoid pack and requires pan drop and fluid service. Labour ranges USD 150–400. Sensor cost USD 30–120. Older GM trucks have an external sensor that is a USD 50 DIY fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will P0711 damage my transmission?

P0711 itself does not cause damage but the TCM's response to bad data may. If the converter clutch locks while fluid is too cold, or shifts happen with wrong timing, wear accumulates faster than normal. Get it fixed within a few weeks.

Can I drive with P0711?

Yes — most vehicles do not enter limp mode for this code. Drive normally and avoid extended high-load driving (towing, racing) until the sensor is fixed. The TCM falls back to default values that are safe but not optimal.
