P0712

Universal (All Makes) Vehicle (OBD-II)

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

P0712 means the Transmission Fluid Temperature sensor circuit is reading low voltage — the TCM interprets this as either a shorted sensor or impossibly hot fluid (over 300°F). The most common cause is a sensor that has shorted internally. The transmission may default to safe shift settings that feel firm or harsh.

Affected Models

  • All vehicles 1996+ with automatic transmissions
  • Common in GM trucks (Silverado, Tahoe) with 4L60E
  • Common in Ford F-150 with 6R80
  • Common in Chrysler/Dodge with 8HP

Common Causes

  • Shorted TFT sensor (internal short to ground)
  • Wiring shorted to ground between sensor and TCM
  • Connector contaminated with conductive debris or moisture
  • Damaged sensor pins from rough handling during a previous service
  • TCM input pin fault (rare)

How to Fix It

  1. Check freeze frame data.

Pull the temperature reading at the moment the code set. Reading at or below sensor minimum (often -40°F) confirms a circuit fault, not a real cold reading.

  2. Inspect the TFT sensor connector.

Look for moisture, corrosion, or debris bridging pins. Clean with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease before reconnecting.

  3. Test sensor resistance.

Disconnect the sensor and measure resistance. A reading near zero ohms confirms an internal short. Compare against the manufacturer spec for your vehicle.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness.

Trace the harness from the TFT sensor to the TCM. Look for chafed insulation against transmission casing — a common cause of shorts to ground.

  5. Replace the sensor if confirmed shorted.

External sensors are simple DIY. Internal sensors (part of the valve body solenoid pack on most modern transmissions) require professional service due to fluid handling.

When to Call a Professional

Internal TFT sensor replacement requires transmission pan drop and fluid service — typically USD 200–400 at a shop. External sensor replacement on older GM is a 30-minute DIY job costing USD 30–80 in parts. Shorted wiring tracing adds USD 80–150 in diagnostic labour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will P0712 cause limp mode?

Some vehicles enter limp mode with P0712, others fall back to default temperature assumptions. Limp mode limits the transmission to one or two gears and you will notice firm shifts or no overdrive. Get diagnosis before extended driving.

How long can the sensor be ignored?

Days to a couple of weeks for diagnosis is acceptable. The TCM uses a default temperature value when the sensor fails, which works for normal driving but is not optimal under heavy load. Do not delay if you tow or drive in extreme heat.
