Audio Cutting Out
Bose Bluetooth Speaker
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Move your phone closer to the speaker — most Bose audio cutouts are caused by Bluetooth signal loss from distance or interference. If the phone is already close, try disabling Wi-Fi on the phone temporarily, as 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi can interfere with Bluetooth.
Affected Models
- Bose SoundLink Flex
- Bose SoundLink Max
- Bose SoundLink Color II / III
- Bose SoundLink Revolve / Revolve+
- Bose Portable Smart Speaker
Common Causes
- Bluetooth signal interrupted by distance, walls, or obstacles
- 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi router interfering with Bluetooth
- Multiple Bluetooth devices competing for connection
- Phone moving in and out of range in a pocket or bag
- Outdated firmware causing audio buffer issues
How to Fix It
-
Move the phone within 1–2 metres of the speaker.
Bluetooth has a maximum range of about 10 metres in open space, but walls and other 2.4 GHz devices dramatically reduce usable range. Start at close range to eliminate distance as a cause.
-
Turn off Wi-Fi on your phone temporarily.
Wi-Fi (especially 2.4 GHz band) and Bluetooth share overlapping frequency ranges. If audio stabilises with Wi-Fi off, switch your router to 5 GHz band to avoid the conflict.
-
Move other Bluetooth devices away.
Multiple Bluetooth devices nearby compete for the same radio spectrum. Turn off Bluetooth on devices you are not using to reduce interference.
-
Update the speaker firmware.
Open the Bose Music app → your speaker → Settings → Software Updates. Firmware updates often include Bluetooth stability and buffering fixes.
-
Forget and re-pair the speaker.
On your phone, go to Bluetooth settings → forget the Bose speaker → re-pair from scratch. This clears any corrupted connection profile that may cause intermittent dropouts.
When to Call a Professional
If audio cuts out consistently within 1 metre with no interference nearby, the Bluetooth antenna may be damaged. Contact Bose support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Bose speaker cuts out every 30 seconds exactly — what causes that?
A regular interval cutout is almost always a power-saving feature putting the source device's Bluetooth to sleep. Check your phone's battery optimisation settings and exclude the Bose app from any auto-sleep rules.
Audio cuts out only in one room — is the speaker broken?
No — this is interference, not a speaker fault. That room likely has a Wi-Fi router, microwave, or baby monitor running at 2.4 GHz. Move the speaker or switch your router to 5 GHz.
