Crackling Sound
Bose Bluetooth Speaker
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Reduce the volume on both your phone and the speaker — Bose speakers distort (crackle) when driven beyond their limit. Check for a weak Bluetooth signal — move the phone closer to the speaker to reduce audio dropouts that sound like crackling. If crackling happens at any volume, a damaged driver or water inside the speaker is likely.
Affected Models
- Bose SoundLink Flex
- Bose SoundLink Max
- Bose SoundLink Color II / III
- Bose SoundLink Revolve / Revolve+
- Bose Portable Smart Speaker
Common Causes
- Volume on source device or speaker set too high causing clipping distortion
- Weak Bluetooth connection causing packet loss heard as crackling
- Water or moisture inside the speaker cone or driver
- Damaged or torn speaker driver from overpowering
- Audio codec mismatch between phone and speaker
How to Fix It
-
Reduce volume on both devices
Set your phone to 70–80% volume and control the rest from the speaker. Running the phone at 100% while the speaker is also at 100% causes hard clipping distortion that sounds like crackling.
-
Move the phone closer
Bluetooth packet loss caused by distance or interference produces an audible crackling or stuttering. Move the phone within 3 metres of the speaker and confirm whether the crackling stops.
-
Check for water inside the driver
After water exposure, Bose speakers can crackle as the driver cone is wet. Stand the speaker upright, let it dry for 24–48 hours in a warm (not hot) place before using it again.
-
Try a different audio source
Connect a different phone or tablet to the speaker. If crackling only happens with one device, the source device's audio output or equaliser settings are the cause.
-
Update firmware via the Bose app
Open the Bose Connect app or Bose Music app → your speaker → Settings → Software Updates. Firmware updates can include audio processing fixes for distortion bugs.
When to Call a Professional
If crackling persists at low volume with a strong Bluetooth signal and no moisture, the speaker driver is physically damaged. Contact Bose support for a repair or replacement assessment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Bose SoundLink Flex crackling after being in water — how to fix?
Even though the Flex is IP67 rated, water can temporarily get past the driver grille. Do not use the speaker. Place it upright in a dry environment for 24–48 hours. The crackling should stop once the driver dries out.
Bose speaker crackles at high bass — why?
Heavy bass at high volume exceeds the speaker's excursion limit, causing the driver to bottom out. Reduce the bass in your phone's equaliser and lower the volume. The SoundLink speakers are tuned for balanced volume, not extreme bass.
Bose speaker crackles only on one song — is it the speaker?
Likely not. Some audio tracks are mastered with clipping or distortion already in the recording. Test the same track on headphones directly from your phone. If it crackles there too, the source file is distorted.
