Low Volume

Bose Bluetooth Speaker

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Check that both your phone volume AND the speaker volume are at maximum — they are separate controls. If both are at 100% and volume is still low, check for a volume limit set in the Bose Music app, or forget and re-pair the speaker.

Affected Models

  • Bose SoundLink Flex
  • Bose SoundLink Max
  • Bose SoundLink Color II / III
  • Bose SoundLink Revolve / Revolve+
  • Bose Portable Smart Speaker

Common Causes

  • Phone volume lower than 100% — phone and speaker volumes are independent
  • Volume limit enabled in the Bose app settings
  • Equaliser on phone applying heavy bass boost that compresses overall volume
  • Bluetooth codec negotiating a lower quality connection
  • Water or lint in the grille muffling output

How to Fix It

  1. Set both volumes to maximum independently.

Press volume up on your phone to 100%, then press volume up on the speaker itself. Bose speakers and source devices have separate volume levels — one at 50% halves the total output.

  2. Check for a volume limit in the Bose app.

Open the Bose Music app → your speaker → Settings → Volume Limit. If a limit is set, remove it. This setting caps the speaker's maximum output and is sometimes set by mistake.

  3. Disable any equaliser on your phone.

Bass-heavy EQ presets use dynamic range compression which can reduce perceived loudness. Try the flat/normal EQ preset and compare volume.

  4. Forget and re-pair the speaker.

Go to your phone's Bluetooth settings → forget the Bose speaker → hold the Bose Bluetooth button for 3 seconds to enter pairing mode → pair again. A fresh pairing negotiates the best available codec.

  5. Check the speaker grille for blockages.

Lint, sand, or dried water inside the grille can reduce output volume noticeably. Use a dry soft brush or compressed air to clean the grille openings.

When to Call a Professional

If volume is low at maximum on multiple source devices with no app limits set, the amplifier board may be damaged. Contact Bose support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bose SoundLink Flex is quieter than my old speaker — is it defective?

The Flex is tuned for balanced outdoor sound, not maximum loudness. Make sure both phone and speaker volumes are at 100% and the Volume Limit in the app is off before concluding the speaker is faulty.

Volume goes low automatically after a few minutes — why?

This is usually the Volume Limit feature engaging, or a phone auto-volume feature. Check both the Bose app settings and your phone's sound settings for any automatic volume limits.
