FILL TANK

Breville Espresso Machine

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Breville shows 'FILL TANK' when the water reservoir is empty, when the float in the tank is stuck, or when the tank is not pressed fully into its dock at the rear of the machine.
Refill, reseat, and the prompt clears within seconds.
If the tank is full but the prompt stays, the magnetic float is stuck — easy to fix by tapping the tank or rinsing the float.

Affected Models

  • Breville Barista Express
  • Breville Barista Pro
  • Breville Barista Touch
  • Breville Barista Touch Impress
  • Breville Oracle
  • Breville Dual Boiler

Common Causes

  • Reservoir actually empty
  • Float magnet stuck at the bottom of the tank
  • Tank not pressed fully into the rear dock
  • Sensor under the dock dirty (limescale or coffee splatter)
  • Tank o-ring perished and water leaking back out
  • Filter cartridge installed wrong, blocking water flow

How to Fix It

  1. Pull the tank from the back.

On most Breville espresso machines, the reservoir is at the rear.
    Lift it straight up.
    Bring to the sink.

  2. Fill with fresh cold water.

Use filtered or bottled water if your tap is hard.
Fill to the MAX line — not above, which can spill over and trigger the EMPTY ME prompt instead.
The float (a small marker inside) should rise.

  3. Tap the tank gently.

If the tank is full but the prompt stays, the float is stuck.
Tap the side of the tank with the heel of your hand a few times.
The float dislodges and the prompt clears.

  4. Rinse the float.

If tapping does not free it, rinse the tank well — limescale on the float pin keeps it stuck.
For stubborn cases, descale with a Breville cleaning tablet per the menu instructions.

  5. Reseat firmly into the dock.

Push the tank straight down into its slot.
You should feel a positive seat.
A tilted tank does not engage the dock sensor and the prompt stays active even with a full tank.

  6. Check the filter cartridge.

If your tank uses a Breville Claris filter, ensure it is screwed in fully and was soaked before installation.
A loose or unsoaked filter blocks flow and the machine acts as if the tank is empty.

  7. Clean the dock sensor.

Wipe the magnet sensor on the dock with a clean cloth and a drop of vinegar.
Limescale on the sensor weakens detection.
    Dry before reseating the tank.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run with the tank half full?

Yes — the prompt only fires below the low threshold, not at half full.
Topping up rather than waiting is fine for daily use, but a tank that is allowed to run dry repeatedly causes scale to build up faster on the heating element.
