Empty Drip Tray

Jura Coffee Machine

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Jura shows 'Empty drip tray' when the float in the tray reaches the full mark, or when the tray is removed.
The message blocks brewing until the tray is empty and reseated.
Pulling the tray fully out for 5 seconds, emptying, and reinserting clears the prompt within moments.
If the prompt returns immediately, the float is stuck or coffee residue is keeping the sensor active.

Affected Models

  • Jura E8
  • Jura ENA 8
  • Jura S8
  • Jura Z10
  • Jura J8
  • Jura WE8
  • Jura Impressa series

Common Causes

  • Drip tray actually full from rinse cycles and milk drips
  • Float magnet stuck on coffee oil residue
  • Tray not pushed all the way back into its slot
  • Tray sensor in the cabinet dirty
  • Spent grounds container also full and pushing on the tray (some models share sensors)

How to Fix It

  1. Slide the tray out.

Pull the drip tray straight out from the front of the machine.
The whole assembly — drip tray and grounds container — usually comes out together on Jura models.

  2. Empty both pieces.

Empty the drip tray water into the sink.
Empty the grounds container into the bin.
Many Jura models will not clear the prompt until both are empty, since pushing tabs share sensors.

  3. Rinse and dry.

    Rinse both with warm water.
    Wipe with a soft cloth.
Dry well — water left under the assembly can keep the float up after reinsertion.

  4. Wipe the cabinet sensor.

Look into the cabinet where the tray slots in.
Coffee oils and milk splatter accumulate on the sensor magnet area.
Wipe with a damp cloth and dry.

  5. Reseat firmly.

Slide the assembly fully back in.
You should feel a positive stop.
A tray pushed in only halfway leaves the sensor inactive and the prompt stays.
Some models give a soft click when fully seated.

  6. Wait 5 seconds.

After reinserting, wait 5 seconds before tapping any button.
The machine reads the sensor on a brief poll and clears the prompt automatically.
Tapping immediately can lead the machine to think the tray was never reseated.

  7. Free a stuck float.

If the float does not lift and drop freely, soak the tray in warm water with dish soap for 15 minutes.
Coffee oil glues the float to the side of the housing.
    Rinse and dry, then reseat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Jura prompt for both tray and grounds at once?

Many Jura models share a single tab sensor between the drip tray and grounds container.
Removing one removes both.
The machine cannot tell which is full, so it asks you to handle both at once.
