Empty Drip Tray
Philips Coffee Machine
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Philips Saeco shows 'Empty drip tray' when the red float marker on top of the tray rises through the metal grid.
This is a sensor reading on the float, not a counter.
Pull the tray out for 5 seconds, empty, dry, and reseat.
The prompt clears as soon as the float drops back down and the machine sees the tray is reinserted.
Affected Models
- Philips Saeco PicoBaristo
- Philips Saeco Xelsis
- Philips Saeco Royal
- Philips 5400 LatteGo
- Philips 3200 LatteGo
- Philips 2200 series
Common Causes
- Drip tray full of water from rinses and milk drips
- Red float stuck up on coffee residue
- Tray not pushed in far enough
- Spent puck container behind the tray also full
- Front door magnet sensor dirty (some models combine sensors)
How to Fix It
-
Pull the drip tray.
Slide it straight out from the front.
The puck container behind it usually slides out together — that is by design on most Saeco models.
Remove both. -
Empty both.
Drip tray water into the sink.
Spent coffee pucks into the bin.
Most Saecos require both empty for the prompt to clear, since they share a sensor. -
Rinse and dry.
Rinse with warm water.
Wipe with a cloth.
The red float on top of the tray should drop down freely when the tray is empty.
If it stays up, the float is stuck. -
Free the float if stuck.
Tap the side of the tray a few times.
Or remove the metal grid on top and gently push the float back down.
Rinse the float pin to remove any residue keeping it stuck. -
Wipe the cavity sensor.
Look into the cabinet where the tray sits.
The sensor area can have coffee splatter or milk residue.
Wipe with a damp cloth and dry. -
Reinsert fully.
Slide the puck container in first, then the drip tray.
Push until you feel a stop and the front face is flush with the machine.
A tray sticking out by even a few millimetres can keep the prompt active. -
Wait a few seconds.
Give the machine 5 seconds to read the sensor before tapping any button.
The display refreshes and the prompt clears.
If it does not, recheck that the float is fully down and the tray is fully seated.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Saeco ask me to empty before the tray is full?
Saeco machines run a small rinse cycle on every startup.
Even a few brews fill the tray fast because every shot ends with a small purge.
Empty the tray daily on machines used several times per day — it is the easiest habit to form.
