Can't Sign In
Google Chromebook
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Check your Google account password is correct — reset it at accounts.google.com on another device if needed. Make sure the Chromebook has internet access — Chrome OS requires Wi-Fi to verify your Google account on first sign-in. For school Chromebooks, the account may have expired or been deprovisioned — contact your IT admin.
Affected Models
- All Chromebook models (Acer, ASUS, HP, Lenovo, Samsung)
- Chrome OS 100 and later
- Enterprise and Education managed Chromebooks
Common Causes
- Incorrect Google account password
- No internet connection during sign-in verification
- Google account disabled, suspended, or the password changed recently
- School or work managed Chromebook requiring enrollment through a specific network
- Chrome OS update interrupted leaving the sign-in service in a broken state
How to Fix It
-
Verify the password on another device
Open a browser on your phone and go to myaccount.google.com. Try signing in with the same email and password. If it fails there too, the password is wrong — reset it at accounts.google.com/signin/recovery.
-
Check Wi-Fi is connected before signing in
On the Chromebook sign-in screen, click the Wi-Fi icon (bottom right) and connect to your network before entering your Google credentials. Chrome OS cannot verify a new account login offline.
-
Try a different Google account
If you have another Google account, try signing in with that. If it succeeds, the issue is specific to the original account (suspended, 2FA problem, etc.).
-
Enable offline sign-in (if previously signed in)
If you have signed into the Chromebook before and have internet issues, click 'Browse as Guest' first to verify Wi-Fi, then return to sign-in. Previously-used accounts can sign in offline within 24 hours of last sync.
-
Powerwash and re-enroll (last resort)
Press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R at the sign-in screen → Restart → Powerwash → Continue. After the reset, sign in fresh. All data is in Google Drive and will sync back.
When to Call a Professional
If you cannot sign in after resetting your Google password and have a working internet connection, contact Google Support or your school/workplace IT administrator — this is an account management issue.
Frequently Asked Questions
Chromebook says 'Your account is not allowed on this device' — what does it mean?
This is a managed Chromebook that only allows specific email domains (e.g. only @school.edu accounts). You need to use the account that the device was enrolled with. If it is a personal Chromebook, a Powerwash will remove the enrollment restriction.
Chromebook sign-in stuck on loading spinner — how to fix?
The Chromebook is trying to contact Google's servers but getting no response. Ensure Wi-Fi is connected. If the spinner never resolves, do an EC reset (Refresh + Power for 10 seconds) and try again.
Forgot Chromebook PIN — how to get back in?
On the sign-in screen, click 'Forgot PIN?' then sign in with your full Google account password instead. If you have also forgotten the password, go to accounts.google.com/signin/recovery on another device.
